Very interesting to just walk and browse. Was nice for me to shop while hubby people watched, sitting on the outdoor benches. Lots of tourist shops. Try the 56 flavours Ice Cream! Banana Soft Ice Cream in a waffle cone. It just doesn't get any better than that!

“Fun Place”

Great historic town to walk around, read the signs and souvenir shop. A bit far from Mt Rushmore if that is your main interest.

“Just Dead”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2014

There is no history here to speak of! They say the entire downtown area is on the National Register of Historic Places, but if true, this treasure has been squandered. We found a small Visitors Center, a walking tour of places that were either very difficult to find or no longer in existence, a downtown full of buildings that may or may not have been historic (few markers providing info. and poor upkeep), trashy gift shops, a few not-so-nice casinos.
So: No history. No shopping. It appeared that there was not much gambling. No old-west shows to enjoy.
We drove to Mount Moriah Cemetery and paid the fee to visit. Another disappointment: Wild Bill Hickock's grave has been so restored that it looks modern.
Never did find a gold mine to tour. Signage in & around the town is not helpful.
Also drove on to Lead. The entire town was blocked off because the main street was under construction.
My recommendation: Until they come up with a better way to showcase the history of the Deadwood area, save your time & money and stay away.

“Great Historical Area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

We enjoyed the buildings and history in Deadwood, walking where other historical people had walked. Despite the reviews of others, if you go, remember that Deadwood was originally a gambling / gold mining mecca. The gold isn't here anymore but the gambling is so you do have slots, table games, etc. almost everywhere. It isn't really a family atmosphere so you should know that in advance. However the history, buildings, etc. are enjoyable for all ages if you like history. It was a fun day and I'm glad we stopped in.
