We returned to Deadwood Dick's to stay for a week in June 2013. This was our third trip back to Deadwood Dicks and it was even better than it was our previous two stays. Mary and Dave, the owners, couldn't have been more accommodating and they did everything they could to make sure our stay was enjoyable. And it was definitely that and more. They had two additional employees working the front desk to assure all the guests were taken care of in FIRST CLASS STYLE. Tony and Cindy bent over backwards to help us with anything we needed. The old time gated elevator was being upgraded while we were there so we were unable to use it. Cindy was such a caring and considerate gal and when we arrived she not only took us and our luggage up in the freight elevator to our room but she even carried a lot of our luggage into and out of the elevator. Mary and Dave made arrangements for Cindy and Dave and even Mike (the first class cook in the Deadwood Lunch Counter) to give us a ride up to our suite on the HISTORIC - ONE OF A KIND FREIGHT ELEVATOR. That was an adventure in itself - WOWWIE. I was able to film some video of a couple of those trips up to our room in that elevator!!! It was like stepping back in a time capsule - something I'll never forget - especially looking up at the pulleys - as there was no roof on this original 1851 elevator. And our suite - Room 307 - was so roomy and comfortable. Especially the bed - like sleeping on whipped cream. I only hope that the word of this fantastic hotel doesn't spread so much that Well done, Mary and Dave! Want to also add that the restaurant next to the Antique Shop is OUTSTANDING - great service and a FIRST CLASS COOK too!

We were SO excited to stay at Deadwood Dick's but extremely disappointed as soon as we got there. The owner called us two days prior to our arrival to let us know the elevator was not working and that our room was to be on the 4th floor. Since the Victorian stairs are very steep and narrow, they offered to take us up and down the freight elevator - fine, totally reasonable solution (the owner, husband, later told us the elevator has been down 2.5 months). The room we wanted to stay in had a water break and they put us in the room we specifically stated we did not want to occupy (see photos). The room obviously has not been updated or refreshed with new paint or carpet in MANY decades, not to mention the moldy smelling 1970s upholstered furniture. It wasn't funky in a good way. It felt dirty, dingy, and dank. The freight elevator didn't appear to have been cleaned since it was built. But none of these things were actually the problem of why we didn't like it!

My girlfriend became quite ill during our stay which required that we cut our vacation short. After explaining this to the owner (wife) she treated us TERRIBLY. She acted as if we were inconveniencing her rather than having any empathy that my obviously VERY sick friend needed to go home. She did refund half of our second night's stay - we weren't as worried about the money part of the deal - it was her aggressive attitude. It was rather strange and we left feeling really confused.

The hotel is rather labyrinth-like. My girlfriend got lost in the hall on the way to one of the staircases. When she tried a knob on one of the doors, it fell off its hinges! A breaker blew in our room just as we were going to sleep. Of course the phone (see photo) doesn't actually work. It's just there for...not sure...? We finally found our cell phone in order to call someone to fix it. The wife acted like it was our fault the breaker blew. The husband came to fix it and was also accusatory. Perhaps a change the hotel could make is to tell their patrons about the wiring issues? (Just a hint: since we haven't stayed there before, we couldn't have known about the problem).

Also, if you're excited about the antique mall, get ready for what should more properly be referred to as a junk store. Perhaps instead of having a crappy hotel, crappy antique store, crappy restaurant, and crappy casino, focus on ONE thing and actually do it well. Oh, and learn about customer service.

This business has so much potential. The bones of the building are fantastic. I'd also like to say two positives: the bed was pretty comfortable and we slept well. The other great thing Deadwood Dick's has going for it is the daytime employee who was extremely helpful, competent, and friendly.

We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay at our hotel. It is true our passenger elevator was inoperable during and before your stay. Since our building and elevator are over 100 years old, it was not an overnight fix. We had hoped it would be running by the time of your stay however, since it wasn't we called you and specifically asked if that was going to be ok or if we should find you other accommodations. You assured us it was fine. We do not have telephones in any of our rooms and it is stated in our confirmation we sent to you when you made the reservation. The phone in the photo is a decorative item that matches the wildlife theme of the suite. As you stated, we did refund you half of your second nights stay, which is not our policy. We require a 7 day notice to cancel on suites. I thought we were more than accommodating since your having to leave was due to illness. I am sorry you felt the need to give us a bad review.

My fiance and I stayed at Deadwood Dick's in May as part of an epic road trip through South Dakota / Wyoming. We loved it there! Sure, the building is old and may not have all the comforts of a five star hotel, but for us that was part of the adventure. We wanted to stay in a place where we could really feel like we were getting the full-on experience of Deadwood and at DD's we definitely did. We ate at the bar, played a few slots (semi-good luck!) and even found a vase in the antique shop that was a perfect gift for my soon-to-be mother in law. The owners were super nice and gave us a lot of good suggestions about things to do (if you go, you have to check out Tatanka!). We would definitely recommend Deadwood Dick's and would totally stay here again!

I love staying here because Dave and Mary (the owners) make me feel so welcome. The rooms are beautifully set up with full kitchen and are apartment style with lots of room. I feel very at home when I stay here and would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay while in the Deadwood area.

This was fun. Could only stay one night but we'll be returning. The room was vintage and very comfortable. The elevator is almosr worth the trip itself. And our hosts were outstanding. Can't imagine staying in a cookie-cutter hotel when a place like DD's is available.

This hotel is in an excellent location for historic Deadwood, you can walk to most things and there is on-site parking. As the lift was broken we were upgraded to a two bedrooms suite which was old-fashioned but light, spacious and had a good view of the town. However the antiquated heating system was so noisy during the night with creaks, groans and large bangs that I slept very poorly. I would strongly recommend this hotel in the summer but if you're coming in the winter (it was -13 C during the night) I would check first that the heating was sorted or bring ear-plugs.

We are sorry you had a poor nights sleep at our hotel. Sometimes in the winter our boiler gets air in the system and vents through the pipes. This can cause banging. Usually it is not enough to keep you awake, so we apologize for your inconvenience.

We stayed in the suite on the 3rd floor. It had a mini kitchen with a small (dorm size) fridge, microwave and coffee maker. It was also stalked with dishes and silverware. The room had a queen and a king bed, husband and I thought the king bed was very comfortable, we slept good. We also ate a few meals at the restaurant, the food and drinks were good.
I think all in all we had a great stay!! People need to remember that Deadwood is an older town, the buildings are older. That doesnt mean it isnt a nice place to stay. It was clean and was decorated with cute antiques. We will stay there again in the future, had a great time in Deadwood!!!!
