Thank you to Melanie (and staff) at the Martin Mason Hotel, it was a pleasure to stay at your hotel and you were more than accommodating to us. The restoration done to this hotel is absolutely beautiful and very comfortable. We will definitely recommend your hotel and friends who will be travelling to South Dakota.

Thanks again,
Rick and Dee

We found this hotel after a bad experience in South Dakota when we didn't check TripAdvisor. We checked with TripAdvisor and found the Martin & Mason as the top rated hotel in Deadwood.

We must admit that when we first got to the hotel we were a little concerned. First, it's not that easy to find since it is inside the Wooden Nickle Casino and there is no typical entry area or "front desk". You check in at the Casino Cashier.

We tend to be particular about where we stay and we almost called it quits before checking in. But the folks were so nice that we decided to take a look at the room. As soon as we got off the elevator on the hotel floor, we began to be impressed. This old building had been lovingly restored to it's former glory. Our room, the Lucy Ann, was very nice and gave us the feeling of the past while providing everything that you need. Our guide (we hesitate to say Bellman) was Archie and he was wonderful. He offered us a tour and showed us most of the unoccupied rooms. We were especially impressed with Room 1, the Sanderson Suite, and Archie offered to work with the owner to get us a complimentary upgrade. We took Archie's recommendation for dinner at the Deadwood Social Club which by the way was excellent. When we returned to the hotel, Archie was waiting to help us move into the Suite.

In addition, Melanie, the owner, was waiting to give us much of the history of the building and by coincidence, she had relatives very close to our home in Kentucky. We had a very nice talk. The hotel provides complimentary soft drinks coffee and there were warm scones in the morning.

This is a "don't miss" if you are in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Room Tip: Don't be discouraged by the casino, the rooms and people are wonderful.

Thank you so much for the wonderful review! We all really enjoyed meeting you on your trip through the west. It is guests such as yourselves that make a small hotel like ours so much fun. We hope you had a great time on the rest of your journey and hope that you will return again to see us!

We stayed in the Martin Mason Hotel between 6th and 10th June. From the start, Melanie and her staff could not have been more welcoming, approachable and helpful. The decor of the hotel, especially the bedrooms, are all based on the victorian age, in sympathy with historic Deadwood. If you want a hotel with modern, "any town", facilities then this hotel is not for you. We stayed in room 11 which was very comfortable (great comfy bed!). There are no coffee facilities in the room but Melanie kindly offered us a kettle and tea making facilities, which was very welcome after our long journey from Elk Mountain. Although the Martin Mason doesn't provide breakfast, It does provide lovely scones and fresh coffee from 6am in the morning. The scones were delicious!!! However, if you want a cooked breakfast, the adjoining Lee Str Station diner/cafe is well worth a visit. Martin Mason hotel is right in the centre of Deadwood and only minutes away from all the activities, restaurants and shops. We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel and we were a little sorry to leave. If we are ever back in the Black Hills, we will definitely stay in Martin Mason Hotel again.

The suite is pretty great - rated value as a 3 just because we didn't pay - the others in our group did. The pull-out bed just got made and it looks more comfy than my bed at home. Scones are good - free water is an awesome touch that is incredibly handy when you're in a group with family. I would say - if you need a shower instead of a bath, make sure that's known - the shower was the best I've been at for a while - lots of room and tons of pressure.

My buddy who had spent a week in Sturgis during motorcycle week suggested we stay in Deadwood for a better experience. I went on-line and found the Martin Mason Hotel which is a restored historic hotel in town. We loved it. Our room was room #1 and it was in a great location in the hotel. It was Victorian decor, windows facing the street and old train depot. The bath had a large shower and vanity. The people at the hotel were just like old Friends. Melody and Mona were extremely helpful; it seemed like they lived there. We did not know there was a casino in the hotel but it was nice and not very crowded. They had a small rsturant that served good breakfast and lunch. We walked to everything in town and stayed for 5 nights vising sits in the area. Turns out, this area of South Dakota has some wonderful things to visit.

There are too few hotels like this in the States. One can find very good chain hotels in every town which are well run and reasonably priced but we wanted something a bit different and the Martin Mason delivers.

Deadwood was chosen because it is 70 miles from Devils Tower and 50 miles from Mount Rushmore and also interesting for its own history.

The hotel has been a labour of love to restore it to its former glory. For visitors from the UK I can best describe it that they have taken a Grade 1 listed building and turned it into something the National Trust would be proud of. The rooms are really well presented and if we had not happened to arrive on the weekend of the local half marathon we might have been able to get one of the more luxurious rooms. We had room 10 which was smaller than some of the others but still very comfortable. Deadwood is high up in the hills so in early June it was still quite cold at night and we needed heating.

It is difficult to find your way into the hotel as the ground floor is a casino and the Lee Street Diner but they have tried to retain as much authenticity as they can. Parking is difficult in Deadwood and they have their own reserved spaces for the hotel and casino guests.

We were made to feel very welcome here and we like the touches such as the tea and biscuits/scones left out in the morning and the tea we were brought in our room when we arrived back one afternoon.

There is also a set of banqueting rooms on the top floor for weddings and other events which I doubt is in continual use but you might want to check before staying here if you are worried about noise. When were there it was all very quiet.

I am not sure when we might return to Deadwood but I would definitely stay here if I did.

Room Tip: Go for Sanderson if you can or suite 5/6 which is the corner room in the photograph.

This is a little hotel that has been nicely renovated but kept the look of it's turn of the century origins. It has some slot machines and a small cafe. The staff is simple but very helpful. Be prepared for the fact that when I say it keeps some original feel - I mean there aren't separated bathrooms in the rooms. We had a old timey foot-bathtub. No shower. It was great for relaxing but hard to wash your hair. The room was spotless and I loved that the towels & sheets felt washed but not industrial. (Like in chain hotels where they are clean but rough enough to scratch)
It was a really neat experience but be prepared that its not just a facade that it's "authentic".

Thank you for taking the time to review the Martin & Mason Hotel. You are quite correct in describing our 8 room hotel as charming and small. We hope that, should your travels ever bring you back to Deadwood, you will try one of our other rooms, as only two rooms, #3 and #4 have clawfoot tubs actually in the room. Those rooms do, however, have handheld showers which are very nice to use for washing your hair. Our suggestion next time would be room #1, 2, 5/6 or 7/8 all of which have lovely separate private bathrooms with tiled showers. In addition, rooms #10 and 11/12 have separate private bathrooms with both tub and shower combinations. We hope to see you again sometime to try these rooms!
