We booked this 3 BR house under the impression that it was in Hill City, a very cool little spot at the North end of the Black Hills. When I received the rental details, after paying in full, I saw the address was actually Rapid City. In reality, it is neither. It is about 3 miles up a very winding road that we would have never found in the dark, and barely found in daylight from the nearest highway and at least 20 miles from the center of either town. If you go, remember to print out the directions, and instructions for entering, as you have no cell service for the last 5 miles. Dish for Cable but no internet, and no cell service made this hell for our daughters. It in fact would sleep 12 people, but since there was no hot water in one of only two bathrooms, we ended up fighting over the shower for 3 days. Remember to shop before you leave either town. Golden retriever that belongs to the neighbors chased me, barking and growling on my "peaceful" morning walk and other neighbors were loud and obnoxious starting at 7 am and ending at 11 pm. Beds were squeaky and miserable. My recommendation: Stay in an actual house or rental in Hill City, this one is not worth $400 per night.

Management Response

Hi there,
The response below is from the homeowner:
"Hi Craig,
In South Dakota, an address is determined by the
mail route it is on/where the mail carrier originates. In our case it is
Rapid City. Our cellular phone carrier is Verizon and we have always had reception, as well as, internet access while on the mountain (from the cell phone). GPS has never given out on us when traveling to the house.
We were recently at our home and I did discover that in the basement
shower, hot is cold and cold is hot. Previously, I have always adjusted
the temperature without even looking at the H and C on the water handle.
Our experience with the neighbor’s dogs has been that they are very, very
protective of children and people they know, but never aggressive.
Dogs will bark. They also have provided us with a sense of security when
we are home. The association on the Mountain has a 10PM mandatory quiet time. This is posted on a large, colorful, metal, sign at the gate; near the mailboxes as you enter the association. There are a few other nightly rental homes near. Most of the beds in our home were purchased, new, this past spring. We take pride in quality and cleanliness, and the person who cleans up after our guests, works extremely hard to provide a comfortable environment. My husband and I were disappointed to hear that it seemed your stay was more of an unpleasant experience than should have been. We hope that you were able to enjoy the beauty and serenity of the area and home.
