“Quiet, secluded yet close to everything”
Reviewed 8 June 2013

Julie and Paul are wonderful people that have a great campground. If you are looking for a million dollar resort, this is not it. But if you want a nice, clean, quiet campground within a short distance to all the things to see and do in SD, this is the place to go.

We had a site up in the 60's, so it was up on the top end of their RV spots and VERY quiet. They have more closer to the road and to the office, but we liked being out in the "boonies". There were pine trees all around and you couldn't hear traffic at all. Paul was working on the pool, so the first couple of days was pool free, but then it was up and running and in great condition. The playground was a great hit with my children. They have a jungle gym, sunken tires and a couple of play cabins for the kiddos to play in. They were always working on the campground while we were there putting in new trees, updating the pool and regraveling everything. The local highway maintenance even helped by re-surfacing the entire road up to them. They also have a laundry room with washers and dryers (make sure you push the button for the washers on the BOTTOM row, not the top), and they have a bath house with showers and a bath.

Sylvan lake is just a couple miles up the road from there, Mt. Rushmore is right around the corner around 10 miles away, Hill City is 3 miles away, and the Mikelson Trail is right at Highway 16, 2 miles from the campground. Rapid City is 26 miles away, and you can get to Bear Country, Reptile Gardens, Old MacDonald's Farm, Christmas Village, Sitting Bull Caverns and a bunch more stuff within 30 minutes. Crazy Horse is just down the road between Custer and the turn off to the campground on Highway 16. Everything is super close and easy to get to.

Stayed at Horse Theif campground for 4 days. The campground is nice and clean and the owners are very nice. Very friendly and willing to help you with anything they can. They have many items such as food items, trash bags and even household supplies you might forget to bring at the office/store on the grounds. Rates are a bit high, but all the campgrounds in the area are priced way to high. The only complainant we had was that they did unhook our sewer hose without calling first to say they where doing so. Someone had complained of smelling sewer and since we didn't have a elbow ours was unhooked while we were gone. Although we saw a few others without elbows on their lines as well?! Overall its a nice enough place to stay.

My husband and I stayed in our RV for labor day weekend and enjoyed our stay. The owners were very friendly during check in and later on when asked about things to see nearby. It was very crowded but that's to be expected for that time of year. The campsites are small and very close together but were large enough to fit our full size truck and our 29 foot trailer with a slide. It's a beautiful & quiet campground with plenty of trees and zero traffic noise. Our spot was fairly level with just a slight slope and included a picnic table and a fire pit. The campground is in close proximity to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Hill City, and Bear Country USA. We did not use the pool or the bath house so I cannot comment on those, but overall we had a wonderful & memorable weekend and would recommend Horse Thief to anyone else who wants the same but doesn't want to pay the KOA prices.

My husband and me have spent a night in a cabin last August and loved it!
The campground is quiet and very secluded, with many trees around and no noise from the road. At the same time, Hill city (with all the restaurants and shops) and the major turistic attractions are all pretty close.
Cabins have no frills but are clean and nice. You need to have your own sheets.
My cabin was near the bathrooms unit, but I wasn't bothered by any noise or smell.

I really enjoed the experience and will go again!

Our trip to South Dakota was a last minute change in plans...we had no idea what to expect or what we would experience. We are Canadian and simply googled possible campsites around Mount Rushmore, not knowing the area or history. Horse Thief Campground received good reviews, so we set their address into our GPS and were on our way. Our campsite was in the perfect spot...beautiful view of the mountains. Every single day of our stay, the staff in the office was MORE than friendly and accommodating. I am not a hardcore camper...I appreciate a clean washroom and facilities....the Horse Thief had it all and more. The shower room was always clean, well stocked, had more than enough hot water and smelled fresh. The other guests there were friendly, respectful and very quiet...even those attending the bike rally. The laundry facilities were awesome and immaculate. I can't say enough positive things about our experience. The staff answered any questions we had and even helped us out when our car broke down and had to be towed to a local mechanic's to be fixed. If we ever get back down to South Dakota, I would definitely stay at this campground again. I highly, HIGHLY recommend it.
