Found the family campground quiet and perfect for us. The facilities were clean and the staff were very helpful. If the group wants to go back to South Dakota I would suggest staying at Horse Thief Campground.

Our Boy Scout troop arrived at a different campsite in Hill City only to find that it had been massively clear-cut, so we had to find a new campsite for the week in a hurry. We found the owners at Horse Thief to be extremely accommodating, giving us great rates and the best available sites at such short notice.

The campsite was perfect for us. We certainly made use of the heated pool, the nice showers, the laundry room and, much to the boys' delight, the convenience shop. The location was perfect for our day trips to Mt. Rushmore, Custer, Crazy Horse, Needles Highway and the necessary trips into Hill City for more food.

We recently stayed here on our trip to South Dakota. We got there late, and they had our paperwork waiting, and the lights on for us in the cabin. The cabin was adorable, and great for our needs. The campground was kept very clean, and the surrounding views were amazing. The pool was always clean, as was the bath house. Julie and Paul were very friendly, and answered all our questions and gave us great ideas of where to go and what to see! We checked out a day early (not because of the campground) but because we wanted to get a head start back on our long drive. I would definitely return here if I am ever in the Hill City area again. They even had a store and gift shop where you could buy any forgotten items, and the prices were all very reasonable.

Room Tip: We stayed in cabin G, which was a short walk to the pool, bath house, and camp store.

We stayed in the sleeping cabins and loved every minute of it. The whole campground was very clean and everyone was extremely friendly and helpful with where to go and what to see. We would highly recommend staying here, it's very centrally located, close to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and Lake Sylvan, tons to see and do ! Also they don't gouge you at their camp store, my son went up and didn't have enough quite enough money with him and they let him have it, how many places can we say that about? The owners Julie and Paul are fantastic, can't wait to go back!!!!

We stayed here the first week in June this year and it was wonderful. The family that owns and works there are very sweet people. They made us feel like friends and they were very helpful and curtious. The camp ground was very clean adn kept up. It was beautiful there. I also used their laundry room during our week stay and it was very clean also and very adorable. We very much enjoyed ourselves and will definatley be back! Thank you guys for the wonderful stay.

Thanks again,

Julie and Paul are wonderful people that have a great campground. If you are looking for a million dollar resort, this is not it. But if you want a nice, clean, quiet campground within a short distance to all the things to see and do in SD, this is the place to go.

We had a site up in the 60's, so it was up on the top end of their RV spots and VERY quiet. They have more closer to the road and to the office, but we liked being out in the "boonies". There were pine trees all around and you couldn't hear traffic at all. Paul was working on the pool, so the first couple of days was pool free, but then it was up and running and in great condition. The playground was a great hit with my children. They have a jungle gym, sunken tires and a couple of play cabins for the kiddos to play in. They were always working on the campground while we were there putting in new trees, updating the pool and regraveling everything. The local highway maintenance even helped by re-surfacing the entire road up to them. They also have a laundry room with washers and dryers (make sure you push the button for the washers on the BOTTOM row, not the top), and they have a bath house with showers and a bath.

Sylvan lake is just a couple miles up the road from there, Mt. Rushmore is right around the corner around 10 miles away, Hill City is 3 miles away, and the Mikelson Trail is right at Highway 16, 2 miles from the campground. Rapid City is 26 miles away, and you can get to Bear Country, Reptile Gardens, Old MacDonald's Farm, Christmas Village, Sitting Bull Caverns and a bunch more stuff within 30 minutes. Crazy Horse is just down the road between Custer and the turn off to the campground on Highway 16. Everything is super close and easy to get to.

Stayed at Horse Theif campground for 4 days. The campground is nice and clean and the owners are very nice. Very friendly and willing to help you with anything they can. They have many items such as food items, trash bags and even household supplies you might forget to bring at the office/store on the grounds. Rates are a bit high, but all the campgrounds in the area are priced way to high. The only complainant we had was that they did unhook our sewer hose without calling first to say they where doing so. Someone had complained of smelling sewer and since we didn't have a elbow ours was unhooked while we were gone. Although we saw a few others without elbows on their lines as well?! Overall its a nice enough place to stay.
