“A place to rest”
Reviewed 26 June 2013

Being from Florida I was expecting a typical hotel, this is not typical. This is an owner operated family run business. If you have questions ask, they are more then willing to help or try to help. Do not make the mistake I did and wait till your trip is over to realize they could have made your stay better if I had only asked. The lodge is older, there is not 20 channels on t.v. but they do have channels CNN Cartoon Network and a local channel and two others, but most people do not vacation to watch t.v., if like me you are trying to unwind at night and would like to watch a movie I found out they offer the use of a DVD, just ask. They also do not have in room telephones, but the offer on at the office that is available 24 hours, I was not aware of this when I was there. Also read the small placards left on at least one of the dressers or night stand, as I missed them, they will let you know that they do not provide daily maid service, but if you want your room serviced towels etc. the hanging do not disturb sign has another side to it that reads something to the extent of room to be serviced, I am not sure of the exact words as I did not even know it was there until after the trip. Also, if you experience things like we did door sticking or lock not working properly, the owner whom has informed is a hands on and skilled handyman is only minutes away and will fix the problem right away. As far as breakfast goes, if you like cold cereal and doughnuts or coffee and juice or bananas then they have this as a morning staple, if not Hill City is not far or you can head back toward Rapid City or Ft. Hays has 99 cent all you can eat pancakes heading toward Rapid City on the left. Overall it is a place to sleep, it is between most places like Mt Rushmore and Custer State Park and Deadwood and Rapid City, and Wind Cave, and so much more to do and see in the Black Hills, and If you have Sprint, It does not work in South Dakota, if you have a Sprint flip phone or non smart phone it will carry over to AT&T but the Sprint Smart phone will not work in the state, and no GPS works in the black hills. Overall the owners were outstanding in showing me they cared. I also want to mention there is cat that visits from across the street and she is very friendly, however there are no pets allowed. Thank you to Everyone at Mountain Lodge for the professional and courteous service.

This was our last place to stay on our "great western" trip and by far the nicest.
The rooms are nice (we ended up seeing 3, more later)... albeit a bit on the tight side for a family of 5 but everyone had a bed and a place to put their bag(s).

When we arrived our room had been given to another traveller. An honest mistake by the owner which they made right. They gave us two rooms for the same price as our original room... a double and a single queen. The folks in our original room left the next morning and they put a fire under their staff and had it cleaned before we were done with breakfast and we moved right in. The rooms are (as I said) smaller when you have a number of people but we were not falling over each other.

Breakfast is more of a light breakfast but you can certainly get your fill.

The owners and staff were very friendly and helpful.

The location is central to a lot of sights in the black hills area which made our sight seeing convenient and easy.

We stayed in one of the cabins for 3 nights and it was really great. The people running the desk were very nice and willing to accommodate anything we needed.
The cabin was clean and well stocked (they have dishes, most utensils, bedding, etc....). Each cabin had a little firepit which was nice.
The location was really great because Hill City is close to lots of attractions.

One thing I would mention to parents of younger kids. We were traveling with a 4 and 5 year old and I thought the loft bunkbeds would be awesome for them. We ended up putting them on the futon downstairs though because the bunkbeds are up steep stairs/ladder to the upstairs and they are really close to the railing/balcony area. I just didn't feel they were old enough to be sleeping up there.

Fantastic stay though, would definitely stay here again!

We had a great stay here! We stayed in the main lodge in a room with two queen beds and a futon couch. The room was super clean and smelled great. Very cottage style and the beds were so comfortable. The bathroom was a good size and also very clean as well...nice to have a tub and shower since we were traveling with kids:). There was a nice flat screen tv on the wall, microwave and mini-fridge. It had two windows which was nice and they had nice blinds/curtains. We borrowed their DVD player one evening to watch a family movie. The breakfast was very good and great coffee too! The people were super friendly and that just added to everything else! The location of this place was great and close to many of the attractions. We would choose this place again for sure.

The location was a.) easy to find, b.) close to many attractions and c.) had an amazing scenery! We are living on a tight budget with three little ones and one parent in grad school, so often times a good deal means you sacrifice something else..like service or cleanliness. However, that is not the case here. The room was very clean, never slept so well on a hotel mattress before, and the amenities were awesome (fast wifi, gas grill to use to, a beautiful deck to watch the sunset on, playground, firepit, breakfast, etc.). They even called us and sent us our camcorder we accidently left behind..so sweet! We will definately return to this place each year we come to the Hills!

Our stay at this resort was such a great experience. There had been a huge wind storm that knocked out the power and the owner communicated with us that it might not be back on for our first night. He offered suggestions for other places that had power. We decided to go out for dinner and then check to see if it came back on. During our dinner, they called us to let us know it had been fixed and if we hadn't booked a room yet, we could come and stay. We were very happy and our three kids were excited to see our cabin. We were very happy with the cleanliness of the cabin. It was cozy and had every thing we would need. There was a little loft that our 8 year old was excited about and we had our own bedroom. We have three kids and it was a little bit crowded but we chose that cabin because we wanted to be in our own building and not in a town home where you might hear your neighbors. Our two youngest slept in the loft and our teenage daughter slept on a futon in the living area. We would definitely stay here again. They offered continental breakfast every morning which was awesome....no cooking for mom! The view from our cabin was super pretty with beautiful tall trees every where...it smelled so good. The location of the resort was excellent. Just a couple minutes drive to Hill City and less than twenty minutes drive to many of the attractions. We honestly were not in our cabin that much and it was an excellent value for a family of five. The owner was super friendly and very accommodating. Even though the cabins were somewhat close to each other it was super quiet and we slept well every night. We had a beautiful log bed that was very comfy. We would definitely recommend this place. We were there for Minnesotas MEA week and the crowds were small and very light traffic!

We stayed in cabin 19. It was nice, there were only two of us and it was a little cramped. However, it was clean, the staff was very helpful and friendly, and we had a great time. The inside had a sleeping nook which is specified to be for older children/young adults. I'm 26 and I slept up there. It is much smaller up there than it looks. It's a queen sized bed on the floor and that is all the space up there. The ceiling is RIGHT above you. That's really my only complaint though about the cabin. Our fridge had stopped working, we told the man at the front desk, and within no time he had gone up and switched out our fridge. The cabin/lodge was in a great area. It's only about 10 minutes from the downtown Hill City area, 10 minutes from Keystone, 20 minutes to Mt Rushmore, 25 to Crazy Horse, about forty five minutes to Wind Cave NP, and an hour and a half to the Badlands/Wall. The cabins are all right next to each other. They are not spread out how I thought they would be. It was very quiet though, which was great. There is also a porch, with a view of some hills and trees, a grill, and a table on the porch. Overall, very clean and cared for. I would stay again.
