Mount Rushmore KOA at Palmer Gulch
Reviewed 24 September 2013

You can't go too far wrong with this very large corporate owned KOA. It has many sites, a restaurant, shops, every facility you can name. It is also pricey and lacks the personal touch of family owned KOAs. Enter the front office and you are in a lobby that would be suitable for a high end hotel front desk/gift shop. I found myself standing at the wrong counter for several minutes while staff wandered by ignoring me. I finally moved to the registration counter and again was ignored for about 10 minutes while staff dealt with other issues (not other customers) If you want the familiarity of a typical KOA and don't mind doing without the personal touch and paying more for it...stay here.

This KOA is in a great setting in the shadows of Mount Rushmore. Large campsites, we took a campsite on the edge of the campground, situated under the pine trees, site 226. Large clean restrooms, with welcome heaters on cold mornings. Great camp store which is open until 10pm. Restaurant on site, the Ponderosa, which was also very good. Six miles to the Mount Rushmore Monument and about 12 miles to Crazy Horse monument.

This Koa has everything. The staff was pleasant, the prices fair, the scenery great. My child did not want to leave to go see the sights! We took advantage of the horse rides and the helicopter trip. the location is perfect for accessing all kinds of ameneties.

Worth the deive to it. It is a ways out in the hills but the scenery is great. Would stay again. Close to Mt. Rushmore and about 20 miles to Rapid City. Lots of activities at campground for kids. Tent sites are up on high ground so water not an issue.

We were there for only one night (tried for more) it was amazing for the kids cannot say enough about how much there was to do. This was extremely close to mount rushmore but would be a perfect koa for the middle of nowhere as it should be a destination all its own. The kids did not want to go anywhere else or see anything else best review ypu can get in my house (or RV)

We stayed in one of the RV Deluxe campsites and were very happy with our site, some of the other areas looked like maybe there were too many campsites too close together. It is definitely a place to stay if you are traveling with children. We liked the pool by the horse stables better than the other one, not quite as full. We also loved the horseback riding opportunity and also seeing the horses run towards the stables in the morning and back to the pastures at night, it was really neat to watch. Had soft ice cream from the ice cream shop almost every day! Everyone was friendly. Well worth the price for this campground if you have children! We also took the shuttle to Mt. Rushmore one evening, well worth it and the bus driver was very nice. Location was very good for all the other places we wanted to visit. Only a few miles from Mt. Rushmore.

This is the coolest KOA ever for kids.

Water slide, jump pillow, 2 pools with hot tubs, mini golf, all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, panning for gold and "gems", horseback riding and a splash park!

This campground is very close to Mount Rushmore, Hill City, the 1880 Steam Train, the Needles Highway, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Monument and so much more!
