This museum especially centers around the Homestake Mine in the area and all of its history. The Homestake is now closed (though there is a new project underway for a neutrino lab in its bowels), but the miners from that mine helped put together the static exhibits downstairs that you can see if you do the tour. There is still a lot of good information in the regular exhibits, but add the tour for a complete picture of this famous mine.

This museum was made by former miners of the Homestake Mine. It has replica locals and equipment from the 125 year old gold mine. The scope of information available is beyond description. It is definitely a must see if you are in the area. There are many museums with replica exhibits, this however, has authentic mining equipment and displays--very cool.

My kids were so excited to see the mining museum, and pan for gold, but when we arrived, they said they were "out of gold," and had been for the better part of a week. I had called two days before to be sure that they were open and that they were doing gold panning, and were told they were. To have driven an hour from Custer to Lead to see the museum, to find out that that they provided incorrect information was particularly frustrating.

We spent most of a morning at the Mining Museum and could have spent a full day. The simulated tour of a mine was great. There is a vast array of mining items to view and old photographs of Lead during various stages of the open cut gold mine. Truly a great educational tour that helps a person get some idea of the days of gold mining in Lead.

This is a unique place to visit and for only 5 bucks was well worth it. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor to tell the story of the miner's lives. We were staying just down the street a local B&B so we were only a couple minute walk away.
