“Alex Johnson hotel is OK”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2011

The hotel is registered on the National Registery of Historic Places. Stayed three nights. Rooms were smal but they did their best with furniture for rooms. It was some what cramped. Bed was comfortable and got a good nights sleep. The last night (Saturday) there was a wedding and the guys next door (719) stayed up partying and I could not sleep due to the noise. The hotel is centrally located downtown. They have free service to and from the airport. The parking garage is free but it is two blocks away. The coffee shop is great, the lobby relaxing, the Pub is good, but the Vertex restaurant at the top of the hotel was disappointing. I wanted to take two friends to dinner but all they had were appetizers. The room was clean but not as clean as I would like it - bedspread was stained, carpet did not look like it was vaccumed well and bath room had previous guest's wash cloth hanging on the shower rod. I am not sure if I will stay here again.

We found that while the history of the hotel makes it attractive to stay at, the staff are not pleasant to deal with. Parking garage is a block away, with NO elevator to help with luggage. Small elevators, very small rooms. The furniture is much too big for the size of the rooms. Our toilet ran for 10 minutes after every flush, there is no convienence store onsite, or within a walking distance of the hotel. Makes it hard to find things one may have forgotten while packing. Front desk staff was not helpful in finding places to eat, finding drug stores, had no helpful "local" advice. We had to call the Radisson for helpful advice on good restaurants. Our room had stains on the duvet, the room was not even cleaned on our second day. Our tv did not work the first two nights. While we did ask for assistance, we were not given any until the last night of our stay. When we brought this up to the front desk, the manager was very combatative while speaking with us. Clearly "customer service" is NOT something they stress there. She was very rude, and unpleasant to deal with. Top level bar was nice, great view, but the drinks were very overpriced for the location. $11.00 for a drink? I definately would NOT recommend staying here, as I know I will not return.

Room Tip: Don't Stay here.

My wife and I spent two nights at the AJ last week. We had a great time. Be warned, the place is old, but nicely maintained. rooms are small, so are the bathrooms. However, it is right downtown near good food, and has nice amenities. Seattles Best coffee in the morning etc. The bar upstairs in the top floor is not to be missed. Great cocktails, terrific views, and really good appetizers. It was a very good location for visiting the attractions in the area. They also had a very good fitness facility.

I really wanted to like this hotel. Every time I encountered a new issue I would quickly try to balance my opinion with a positive, all because I really wanted to like this hotel. Unfortunately, it just fell short on too many important issues. The hotel makes an effort to pass itself off as an upscale hotel, but in reality I would compare it to pouring beer into a champagne bottle. Although the hotel is in a great location, has charm and history, hotel management will need to step it up before I return as a guest.

CONS:Parking garage is 2 blocks away on 3rd floor. No security, no staff to assist with luggage. I would not stay here if I were a woman, as I would not feel safe walking alone from the garage at night or early morning. As a result, guests have to unload in a no parking zone in front of hotel-again no staff to help with luggage or open doors or to even greet and welcome you to the hotel.

Staff not very friendly, seemed arrogant, acted as if they were the only "show" in town. When I travel, there is always one or two staff members who are really memorable-I remember nobody from this hotel because it barely seemed as anyone worked there. No presence of leadership. Very discourteous when I requested my wake up call.

Housekeeping still cleaning rooms at 5 and 6 in the evening-and the hotel was not very busy. There needs to be a better focus on deep cleaning-light plates, fixtures, edges of tub and carpets were filthy, Carpet and walls soiled in many places-and he hotel just had a renovation! Duvet on bed had stains. Bathroom tiles very grimy, build up in corners of filth. Towels not replaced during stay until I requested, kleenex was empty and never replenished.

Rooms: Clearly not thought out during renovation. Furniture is too big for the room-at least in our double bed room. Could not fit the chair at the desk, night stand and dresser did not fit against wall which decreased space. Avoid rooms next to the alley and close to the bar patio as noise from both will either keep you up or wake you up. Rooms very small, extra space could have supported more table/counter space instead of the bulky furniture.

Facilities: No restaurant on site!!! Fried pub grub available in bar if you call that dinner. The coffee house has limited items-convection oven not working while we there so pastries were our only option. No courtesy coffee or water in lobby which is a standard for most hotels today.
Elevators very small, need renovation as bell hop carts are very difficult to fit into elevator especially with more than one person. Sky bar on top floor has a nice view but seems very overpriced, but in fairness, is in keeping with everything else overpriced in the area. Very surprised as area prices are like those of a major metropolis.

In closing, it wasn't a horrible stay but it definitely wasn't great. The gift shop/gallery is impressive, beds were comfortable, the nearby Firehouse and other features of dowtown including the Presidential sculptures were a bonus. Unfortunately, the hotel failed in meeting the most basic of expectations.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms near alley and above bar.

Wandered into Rapid City and was drawn directly to the Alex Johnson. A very well maintained Historic property! Upon entering the lobby your eyes are amazed at the restored ambiance of a grand Hotel. Native American culture mixed with the late 20's motiff, all done with modern convenience. Greeted at the Front Desk by a charming young lady named Amanda, I felt immediately at home. In a matter of a few minutes she had me checked in and had given me plenty of information to enhance my stay here in Rapid City. General Manager Deborah happened to step out and I was greeted warmly and made to feel as part of the family. Informed me of the upcoming events and info on the walking tour of Presidents, who are represented by Statues on the downtown street corners. My room was nice, clean, well maintained and equipped with all the necessary items. A huge plus is the in house Seattle's Best Coffee Shop which was clean, orderly and well staffed. In addition there is Paddy O'Neill's Irish Pub also on the ground floor offering your favorite libations and a well rounded Menu of light food. After an afternoon of walking the inviting streets around Downtown Rapid City I returned and was pleased when I took advantage of going up to the Vertex, a Sky Bar on the top floors of the Hotel. Available to guests of the Hotel it is a Private, Members Only Soho Style Bar, offering Top Shelf Beverages an Eclectic Menu and outside areas with a rooftop view of the entire City. Decorated in Art-Deco Style it was a unique experience and the Service was incredible. I will definitely be returning soon to Rapid City and can think of no better place then to lay my head and enjoy top-notch accomodations!

Room Tip: There are "Paranormal" Rooms on the 8th Floor if you are into Ghost Hunting, otherwise the...

My fiance and I stayed here on a road trip to see Mt. Rushmore. The reason we picked it was because a special client of mine who is 91 used to work on the top floor back when there was a radio station there. Now, there is a beautiful rooftop bar. It has a great view of the city and an excellent complimentary Happy Hour spread - jalapeno poppers, flatbread pizza, smoked fish dip and more - it was a pleasant surprise! The hotel is historical, so there are plenty of pictures of it in it's early days, some original pieces still in place and a huge gift shop with lots of memorabilia. There's an Irish bar in the building also where we enjoyed an after dinner drink and some great live entertainment. Friendly staff, beautifully appointed room, ultra comfy bed and bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Room Tip: Get a room with 2 beds - we had one and it was small - very nice, but small.

My partner and I stayed at the Alex Johnson for 3 nights over the labour day weekend in September 2011. The room rate for the first night was very reasonable but it doubled for the 2nd and 3rd night because of Labour Day weekend. We are from the UK and wondered why the rates jumped up! We had booked a King room but when we checked in I was told they only had a Queen room available (even though they had confirmed by email and I had pre-paid for a King). Anyway they eventually 'found' a King room so I was happy. The room was nicely decorated, cosy and quite modern for the age of the hotel. There was a small kitchen area with microwave oven, fridge, coffee machine and a sink along one wall which was handy. The bathroom was small but clean.
The location of the hotel was excellent. It is quite a landmark and can be seen from all over Rapid City. I think it is the tallest building in the area (although none are really very tall). There is no restaurant for breakfast but there is an adjoining coffe shop which served pastries, cookies etc. The most impressive thing for me was the lovely roof top bar and fabulous views areound the city. It is a members bar but hotel guests have access - well worth a visit. They served impressive complimentary canapes from 6pm for an hour or so whilst we were there. The decor is tastefully done too.
The hotel reception is also quite impressive with a large fireplace and a wild west atmosphere.
Definitely recommended. Oh and the hotel is haunted!

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are haunted so ask if you want one!
