“Historic Property centrally located in Downtown Rapid City”
Reviewed 29 July 2012

We stayed here for three nights the end of June 2012 and were exremely satisfied with our stay. I booked the stay 7 months in advance and was able to get an extremely reasonable rate for this area. The hotel lobby is very historic and cool to visit and look around. The room itself was two double beds and was small compared to modern hotels however this is NOT a modern hotel it is a historic property on the historic register - this has to be accounted for and is clearly displayed on the website when booking. The room was clean and comfortable - quiet also. The location is the best part as it is within walking distance to many shops, the new downtown square in Rapid City and different restaurants. The location is also convenient for day trips to Badlands, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave and Wind Cave and many other attractions in this area. I would definately stay here again if returning to Rapid City.

While I'm writing this my family and I are sitting in the hotel lobby at 12:20 am with the fire alarm going off with no fire!! Not one member of staff have a clue what to do. The lady on reception is "in charge" of the hotel but has been given no training in this situation. Ever more worrying is that the fire alarm is barely audible in the bedrooms. I or my children didn't wake up, it was only that my husband hbounce yet gone to sleep that he heard it!!!!! Maybe the fire brigade need to investigate the hotels alarm system and escape procedure.
Before this episode I had a safety deposit box problem. As the room doesn't even have a wardrobe there is nowhere to put a safe so there's safety deposit boxes at reception. When you get the box you write in a book what your details are and what you have in the box......slighty concerning that everyone who writes in the box can see what the people before them have in there. Then when we wanted to get our stuff out the staff couldn't open the box for 20 minutes. Great security to stop someone breaking in...... Not so when we wanted our passports.
The check in lady was amateurish and
not particularly good. The rooms very small with no wardrobe......never had that before in any star hotel.
Overall a totally unpleasant experience. Would not recommend to my worst enemy let alone anyone else.
Meanwhile 30 minutes later still siting in the lobby waiting for the alarm to be turned off and the poor girl behind reception still has no help and not a clue what to do......perhaps they need to spend some money on training and some
wardrobes.

On our coast to coast roadtrip this is the worst hotel we have stayed in. The rooms are small, dated (who still uses blankets?) and noisy. Our room is 3 rooms away and I can still hear the ice machine. Historic in this case just means dated, more 1960's than 30's and badly in need of an update.

If I could check out I would but not sure where else to go

While visiting Mt Rushmore this was a perfect location. It was within walking distance to all the restuarants. It had a breakfast facility on site and a beuatiful roof top lounge and restaurant. The room was large, dated but clean.

The hotel itself has a very nice frontage and very nice lobby. The elevators are small and a little smelly but they do the job. This is an historic hotel and the rooms are small. When I opened the door to our room the first thing I saw was a cigarette burn on the bedspread. Some pillows did not have pillow cases on them and the beds were a bit askew. A call to the front desk brought pillow cases immediately. The carpet was stained. The beds were great...a very good nights sleep. Coffee pot and flat screen television. The staff was friendly and helpful. Located in a historic area of downtown close to restaurants and the Convention Center. Parking is a block away which is not terribly convenient, they do have valet park for $15. Check in and check out was quick and efficient. It would have been nice to have a brochure on the history of the hotel or self tour info. A good overnight stay for our purpose.

Room Tip: Rooms are small as a rule...request a larger room upon check in.

The location is okay- easy to find- but the hotel has a musty, worn feel. The fluorescent lighting in the lobby gives the hotel a gross, eerie atmosphere that is completely out of place with the Western/historic style of the hotel.
The street parking is adequate for able-bodied individuals and fine in the summer.
Overall, I would not seek out this hotel, but would stay there again if I was in the area and did not have better choices.

Room Tip: Pick a low floor, as elevators are small and slow. Avoid the hot, overcrowded and slow diner across...

All visitors and tourists - this is a must. Located close to historic and rebuilt downtown the price was lower than the low end motels and provides clean, updated rooms, A+ service, located next to amazing sites, shops and restaurants.
