“Great base to visit Black Hills & Deadwood areas”
Reviewed 16 November 2010

This hotel is located roughly mid-way between downtown Rapid City and the I-90 interstate. Close to most things you need such as shopping and restaurants providing you have a car. Good value for the price we paid via Hotwire for 3 nights in the last week of July.

It's a very clean property. Great staff and they provide a decent breakfast in a cheerful environment. It also has a nice indoor pool area complete with two hot tubs. If you are there on one of the right nights, you get free snacks and drinks.

Now, some minor criticism. Even though in good condition, the TV and some of the furniture needs upgrading. Our second floor room was located at the back at car park walkway level. This meant we had to keep our curtains closed all the time we were there because of the pedestrian traffic looking in. If it wasn’t for those negatives, we would have given the hotel a higher rating.

It still hasn’t stopped us from recommending the hotel to others as it was a great base to visit Sturgis, the Black Hills, Mt Rushmore, SD Air Space Museum at Ellsworth AFB and Deadwood.

HOJO is really working to upgrade their image, and they have with this hotel. I asked our travel agent about an Embassy Suites (there aren't any in Rapid City), and she recommended this Howard Johnson as the best alternative. We paid a little more for one of the Presidential Suites (with a Jacuzzi in the bedroom--see pictures), so we'd have plenty of room for our 4-night stay. It was great having a dining table (we ordered pizza one night), sink, refrigerator, microwave and coffeemaker in the living area, and TV sets in both the living room and bedroom. I could get up and make coffee, and let hubby sleep in!

Service was great throughout the hotel, especially at the expanded continental breakfast every morning, and the manager's reception (beer, wine and popcorn) on weekday evenings. I was impressed that the staff was so helpful, and didn't start shutting down the breakfast/reception area on the dot of closing time. Breakfast buffet had either microwaveable breakfast burritos (with Pace picante sauce) or a ham/egg/cheese hot pocket, along with the waffles, pastries, bagels, cereals, yogurt, toast, juice and coffee--more than enough selection to satisfy most people. And it was certainly nice to be able to go in and get a glass of (very inexpensive) wine in the evening, take it down to a table beside the pool, or stay and chat with other visitors.

I was a little surprised that there wasn't a separate desk area, but I guess the suites aren't primarily designed for business travelers, and my netbook worked just fine on the dining room table, with good, free high-speed wi-fi internet connection.

Only minor drawback to this hotel might be the location--no restaurants or bars within walking distance. Having said that, it's location off of the main streets makes it very quiet, and it's extremely easy to get to both I-90 and to the Mt. Rushmore Road.

We were primarily sightseeing in the Black Hills, Spearfish Canyon and Mt. Rushmore, and would definitely stay here again if/when we come back to Rapid City.

Very nice hotel and excellent staff. There was a problem at check in and they immediately upgraded us without us even asking. We were upgraded to the Royalty Suite. We stayed three nights and they never asked us to change rooms, it was almost too good to be true. Breakfeast was excellent, typical donuts and pastries, microwavable burritos and hard boiled eggs. Belgin waffle, huge savings not going out to breakfeast. Pool was nice. Hotel clean and very nice. Staff excellent. For dining ask how to get to Sanford's. About 12 blocks away or so, excellent food, plentiful, great decor, reasonable prices. I would stay here no questions asked.

This was a really beautifully decorated hotel with comfy bedding. Great location just off the interstate and VERY easy to get to Mt. Rushmore Drive to get to the Black Hills. Yummy, free deluxe continental breakfast. Rapid City itself is pretty commercialized so we didn't spend much time checking out the city. Would definitely stay at this hotel again if we're in the area.

We stayed here for the nights before and after a tour. The rooms are quite large, and were very clean,as was the hotel overall. Nice size pool, and breakfast was the usual, and quite good. It is near the access road back ti I-90, and is about 1/2 mile from the downtown business, shopping, and restaurant district. It is quite close to the convention center, and across the street from a high school being expanded. I would think this latter item, might lead to heavy congestion in the mornings and afternoons during school sessions. Overall,it's not the most convenient hotel, but the facility itself is recommended for a quiet, good night's sleep. If you don't have to be located in the middle of a noisy active area, then you will like this location.

I have stayed at three other chain hotels in Rapid City in the last year. To summarize; If you like having big rooms, great beds, and a bathroom that doesn't make your skin crawl then Howard Johnson's is the only choice. This is the cleanest and roomiest place I have stayed and the price is competitive or cheaper than most of the value chains near the interstate. The hotel is located near the convention center/arena and there are no restaurants within walking distance; however, I would gladly drive over to the restaurants or the mall as it only takes about five minutes in a town this size. We had two king beds that were very comfortable, and even with two kings in the room there was plenty of space left. The bathroom is nicely decorated and CLEAN! Breakfast area is clean and the food is typical hotel free ho-hum breakfast. We will be returning often as our son is going to school here so we will always stay at HJ's.
