“Pleasant Stay”
Reviewed 2 July 2012

The family stayed at this hotel for a wedding. We had three rooms and one of the conceirge rooms. The rooms were quite nice, very comfortable, clean and quite. All you could ask for from a hotel. Having the conceirge room was a wonderful plus as it was a perfect place for the family to gather so that everyone had a chair and we could talk. It is a great place for a family as they have a very fun pool with a long slide for all ages. The bar is very well appointed and a comfortable atmosphere to relax. A bit above the average.

Room Tip: We had the fourth floor that proved to be quite.

This was our second stay in approximately 1 year at the Grand Gateway. Like our first stay, we had a grand experience. Our room was clean, relatively spacious, and comfortable with a touch of classic elegance. Both our visits to the hotel were associated with motorcycle association conventions, and the hotel staff members were very accommodating to ensure we enjoyed our events to the fullest extent. A perk for motorcyclists who are particular about their machines is that the hotel has a wash station with a supply of clean soft towels to help keep motorcycles looking their best. The hotel is conveniently located to access Interstate 90, Highway 16, and other entry paths into the Black Hills. We will definitely stay here the next time we visit Rapid City.

There were a few problems with this hotel... We were told it is an old Ramada Inn that they are updating. While they have done a few updates (lighting, mirrors, etc), they need to spend some $$ on replacing the faux wood (paper thin) doors and TVs and nasty (stained) carpet as well as some smaller $ replacing plastic non-insulated ice buckets (hospital style) and coffee pot. The room was "fairly clean"... My quilt had a stain on it (they had the bell hop bring an extra blanket, not quilt); there was gum stuck underneath the lampshade between the beds; there was a dead fly in the coffee pot; there was melted ice in a knotted plastic bag inside the ice bucket and dust on the beds and lamps. Other than that, the rooms/sheets were clean but overall dark and dingy. We realized after arrival that we could stay in Custer at the Holiday Inn Express for $171 (tax included) so we opted for that... it was wonderful with a waterfall in the back- suggest a room in the rear :) It was much nicer and still only 1/2 hr from Mt Rushmore. I called first to cancel the last nite of our reservation at Grand Gateway before booking the Holiday Inn and was told it wasn't a problem... but alas, the next morning when we tried to checkout the woman at the desk snottily said we would owe because we didn't cancel in time (turns out, it was a mix up because we had two rooms and they had only shown one for early checkout). This could have been handled professionally but instead Angela kept insisting that we would have to wait for the manager to arrive before we could checkout and would not call him/her. At this point we were very frustrated, not wanting to miss anymore of our vacation time by hanging out for 40mins waiting on a manager. Only after insisting that we were not going to wait any longer, did she talk to the other woman in the back (who was the person that took my call the day before) to find out the mistake. It should also be noted that while waiting to checkout, a call came in from another room who claimed that there was a stain on their bedspread/quilt???? And to boot, there was no free breakfast!

We spent three nights here while visiting friends and family in the Rapid City area. The rooms are dated, but in very good condition and immaculate. We did not use any of the services or amenities, but I wold definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: 1st floor west side is very convenient. The elevators are a little slow so 1st or 2nd floor has eas...

i booked our hotel june 4, 2012 on expedia. we arrived june 22, 2012 for our stay and got shuffled around before someone finally wanted to tell us that we had been bumped to a cheap hotel down the road. i had booked this hotel because of the photos online and the pool area looked nice with a water slide as we were traveling with our 8 yr old daughter. we could come back to this hotel to use the facilities but could stay at the junk hotel down the road. no thanks. we kindly asked for them to give us suggestions on other hotels in the area that offered the same type of pool. the manager came out of his office for 2 whole minutes and then retreated back and sat in there and led us to believe he was checking, while he continued to make himself look busy holding the phone and shuffling papers for 30 minutes before i finally got angry and said someone find me a room somewhere in this town with a nice pool and water slide. he had no intentions of helping. he wouldn't even so much as help his poor employees, what a coward! in the hour we were there, we were one of 4 people that got turned away. and not to mention the two couples that came down after they had checked in angry that their room was nothing like what they had booked, and were not happy. the two worker dudes at the front desk were pleasant, i felt bad for them. i would never work for such a coward in my life! customer service is pretty high in my book, and this guy had none. i have never in my life been a complainer, but i was not happy after traveling in a car for 10 hours, knowing i had a room with a great pool area to relax in just steps away... or so i thought.

We went her on business and were very Pleased. The Managers Brad, Captain, Bob Hodet and entire staff were so amazing. They helped us with anything we needed and gave a sort of attention you don't get with big chain hotels. Hotel was busy but everything went smoothly. Food was great and open 24hrs, the pool area was nice, rooms were clean and front desk was knowledgeable. We will return for sure!! A++++++
