This is a well preserved fish hatchery museum. I didn't read enough prior to my trip and thought it was still a working fish hatchery. There are some large fish in the front holding tank but that is it.

I still enjoyed the rest of the museum, especially the fish train car. Seeing how they moved fish from hatchery to the wild was very interesting. The staff are very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. And you can't beat the price - FREE.

There are a few pleasant nature trails as well.

I would not make a special trip to see, but on your way to or from Spearfish canyon, it is a nice diversion.

Fun to watch the fish and interesting history. Suitable for all ages. There is a fishery museum, a fishery train car, underground viewing of the trout and a gift shop. It is a free attraction

My daughter loved feeding the fish and watching them swim, but this a great place for adults as well. So much information and very knowledgeable staff; you could easily spend a few hours here.

This is the best fish hatchery and museum we have ever been to (and we have stopped at many). The trout ponds, etc. were so interesting - we did buy some fish food to feed them. We thought that the fish rail car was quite interesting and the volunteer there filled us in on the history of the rail car. It was great that the fish historical records are kept at this facility.

The National Fish Hatchery is free, and so well done. Well worth a visit if in the Spearfish area.

Thank mini

What a fun and educational place! My husband and I read about this historic hatchery online during a recent trip to the northern Black Hills and decided to visit. We learned a lot about early fish hatchery days and had a blast feeding the fish. Buy a bag of fish food at the gift shop and watch the fish and ducks make a mad dash to get their fill. This historic hatchery includes great interpretive displays, fun underwater viewing areas, a restored fish rail car, the historic Booth home (the first hatchery manager's home) and a museum. The gift shop has a broad array of items for young and old; proceeds go toward hatchery upkeep and improvement. The hatchery is located adjacent to the beautiful Spearfish city park and is a wonderful asset to city residents and visitors alike. You'll enjoy spending an hour or more at this unique and historic site.
