Firstly all of the staff are very friendly and welcoming, the deluxe double room I stayed in was very cosy, clean and stylish. I have a very specific diet, in which it was no trouble at all for the chef and waiters to cater to my needs, even making changes and alternatives to the meals, something that I seem to struggle with in most other restaurants I go to. I will certainly be returning in the near future with more people. Couldn't be happier with the whole place

When you are looking for a welcoming country house hotel to escape from the rain and the wind of a dismal winter, then this is it. We have been going to this hotel for many years. It has had previous caring owners, but the current owners, Colin and Joy Harrison, have refurbished this lovely house to a high standard while keeping a homely and friendly atmosphere. The food is excellent and the wine list very good. We loved our stay here and will certainly visit again.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 days with our baby between Christmas and New Year. Service was very friendly but not always as swift as you might wish. We also found that assistance was rarely volunteered, it always had to be requested. I slightly had the impression that they could do with a couple of extra staff. Our room was large, with a fantastic view of the hills, but was nonetheless a bit of a squeeze with a small baby. The bathroom was clearly new and well fitted. It was a shame that a piece of the door frame had been cut out to accommodate the door handle and left unpainted. On the plus side the restaurant was exceptional, serving delicious dinners and first class breakfast. Although I was slightly non-plussed when our cream tea was served without cream! Best of all though is that for the overall very good stay we paid an extremely reasonable price. It is evident that they have a loyal clientele and it is likely that we will return.

Room Tip: It is worth paying marginally extra to get one above the basic room.

We have been coming to Keswick all my life and have stayed in many hotels but I have to say for the personal touch this hotel takes some beating. We booked for the new year stay for four nights, back in august 2013, when we arrived not only did the receptionist remember our names she had also remembered we liked sweet wine and had ordered it especially! The meals have been excellent - on par with a mitchelin star anywhere - and we have been to a few! Cannot fault this place, even though the weather was rubbish it was still lovely to sit in the lounge looking out onto spectacular views of the valley. We will be back, take my advice and give it a try, you will not be disappointed .

Room Tip: If you have a dog get the ground floor rooms with own private decking area and straight out onto the...

Stayed on my own (getting a great single rate deal on a double room) for a few days to "get away from it all". Great service and lovely breakfasts. Location is perfect - you can while away several days just setting out on day walks from the hotel and never use the car. Perfect.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights over the Christmas period, our first ever Christmas break away from home. We could not have chosen a better hotel.

The hotel itself is set in lovely Borrowdale about 4.5 miles south of Keswick across a double humped back bridge (built in 1675), drive through the small hamlet of Gates with the pretty hotel on your right. The grounds are tidy and full of mature trees. Great views all around. The entrance to the hotel is very welcomming and the impression is instantly of a well maintained building. The hotel is in a good decorative state throughout.

The staff, all of them, were very cheery and helpful throughout our stay and tried hard to make the festive break something special. The food was top class, tasty and very well presented. We had never been so stuffed for ages.

To make the festive trip enjoyable there were many little extras. Chocolates, wine and fruit in the room as well as chocolates, dates, nuts, sweets etc etc left all over the public areas.

We will return in 2014. Can't wait.

Room Tip: Go the extra mile and book a superior room.

Never stayed here but went in for a drink. The man on the desk was very nice. We sat by the open fire reading the papers. We seen lots of people checking in and he was nice and helpful offering to carry their luggage. Views from the hotel are wonderful
