We knew Lewis from 1970s summer holidays and we wanted to revisit our favourite spots. We were not disappointed. There are a few new visitor centres, and the best-known beaches are busier, but the place is still very wild and unspoiled.
I can't add much to all the glowing reports - the cottage exceeded expectations. It is well-equiped, and unusually for a holiday cottage, there was a big, uncluttered kitchen with plenty of free cupboard space and a large fridge-freezer. The fenced-in garden was a plus for our little dog. The view is great and there were birds all around and on the lochan. When we were sitting on the deck chairs I kept the binoculars handy.
Normal Lewis weather could be kindly described as misty charm, but our week was warm and sunny, with very few midges and dry ground for walking. The footpath to Bosta beach from the community centre was particularly special. There is a bus sevice to Stornoway. It was nice to be somewhere so remote yet not be totally car-dependent every day. Great if you want to wander off and do your own thing!
Breacleit is a scattered village in wild moorland. It has a church and primary school, and a community Centre/Museum, a large children's activity area and a Post Office/shop, all open at particular times only. The Cottage owners have chosen a spot with pleasant views and equipped it for comfort and convenience, and when we needed to phone them for advice were immediately helpful. We had some wet weather and mostly gale force winds, but felt secure and comfortable when we were in the Cottage. It makes a good base to explore the standing stones, broch, mill and other historic sites along the north west coast of Lewis.
Fantastic holiday. Excellent cottage, very relaxing, good location to explore Harris and Lewis. Nice local walks too.
What a fantastic cottage with absolutely everything you need whether like us you are a couple with a dog or a family of six with a dog! 3 miles from the amazing Bosta Beach and a two minute walk to the community shop! Perfect place to stay!
Absolutely loved our stay at Lochan View, the cottage was cosy and comfortable with everything you could possible need provided. Spotlessly clean and excellent directions give from the owner. Hated to leave and would love to return.
Location was only a 40 minute drive off the ferry at Stornaway, don't follow your sat nav, it will take you on some dodgy road. Follow the owners instructions.
Arrived, and we were so taken back by the stunning location. So close to the loch, and there is a post office/wee shop just two minute walk away. Bosta beach is a short drive and it's amazing. Local highland cows freely wandering around beach areas. We loved Luskentyre beach and even the drive there is amazing. Cottage had everything you could possibly need, we brought a lot of food with us, but the Tesco at Stornaway isn't too far, and open good hours. We took a boat trip with Seatrek, which was fab. Next time we will do a longer one. Highly recommend the cottage, booking was smooth and hassle free, location perfect, nice fresh towels, washing machine, dishwasher etc, and your washing will smell great when it comes off the line.... A real treat for someone like me who lives in the city and doesn't get to hand washing out, lol. Dog absolutely loving his holiday too!
Lovely cottage on the banks of the loch. Great for watching the weather, good or bad, roll in from over the hills.
Cottage was spotless and has everything you need for a relaxing holiday in one of the best locations in the country!
