“A pleasant stay”
Reviewed 7 July 2012

While we checked in around 2 the person at the desk was super helpful and took a lot of time to explain local attractions and things to check out. Room was simple but very clean and conducive to our stay. I did have a problem with the vertical blinds letting in too much light and waking me up too early and the wireless signal did not reach our room (they said that they were working on this) but other than this it was a nice, pleasant stay.

After our debacle at the Canyon Gateway Motel in Spearfish (see review), we tried several other hotels in Spearfish, only to be told that the entire city was sold out. One very helpful front desk agent at the Best Western told me that she was sending people about 10-15 mins down the road to the Iron Horse Inn in Whitewood. We called to confirm that they still had room, which they did. We arrived around 2am, having been awake for over 20 hours by this time. When we walked into the office to check in, we were greeted by a very nice man, who even took several minutes to show us a map of where we were and the "Must Do" things in the area. We were pleasantly surprised that he was taking so much time to make sure that we had the best info on the area. We pulled around to the room, noticing that the hotel was very busy. Upon walking in, we noticed that the room was basic, but most importantly, CLEAN! We decided to stay 2 more nights, instead of repacking and moving on down to Rapid City, as we had thought we would need to do. Only a couple of small drawbacks...

1. The property does have Wi-Fi, but it does not reach all of the rooms. They did tell us, however, that they are working on that and should have it fixed very soon.

2. The windows have only vertical blinds, no curtains. At this time of year, the sun is up shortly after 5am, so it gets pretty bright in the room very early.

After driving 11 hours, we found our reservation at a nearby (12 miles away) motel had been "lost" and no rooms were to be had due to a rodeo and music fest that weekend. Yikes, what now? The desk clerk at our scheduled motel, came running out as we were getting into our car, saying she found us a room. Located 1/2 way between Spearfish and Sturgis is the town of Whitewood. As we approached, the motel was past a set of RR tracks and as we turned onto the service road location, we became a little apprehensive. The jokes flew about how we would be spending the night in our car, except we had already given our credit card number. The location is away from city lights and we were not sure just where we were. I went in for our key, found a helpful and pleasant gentleman behind the counter and his small children in a living room located behind the front office watching TV. We went to our room, and everything was new. Just beautiful. The owners had invested a lot into this motel. It was easy to see, from the motel name and pictures on the wall, intended guests were bikers. Except for minor, minor shortcomings ( no table to lay items on, hand towel rack by sink and wider shower curtain). It was a great night, so peaceful. All rooms, I was told, have 2 queen beds all one level with outside entrances. I later saw hook ups outside for RV's also. My hubby said, someone was watching over us, as he said the other motel's neighborhood was not the best. In the morning, we saw we were in a scenic rural neighborhood. The motel looking immaculate and maintained. We determined, as another couple pulled up, that motels that were booked sent their overflow to the Iron Horse. After checking out with the wife at the desk, my hubby and I saw realty signs that indicated the motel was up for sale. I said it was a shame, but because of their out of the way (yet really not) locale, they were most likely having a hard time of it. So I wanted to review them and wish the couple the best. Stay here if you like peace and quiet and a great night's rest.

Room Tip: If you've arrived at this motel, you'll automatically get a great room!
