Owner description: The Hunter offers amazing architecture, a stunning permanent collection and exciting temporary exhibitions, a museum store and café by Dipped Fresh. The Hunter Museum focuses on American art from the Colonial period to the present day. The variety of the collection inside is reflected by the architecture of the museum's exterior. The museum is housed in an early twentieth century mansion, a modern 1970s era building and a sleek, contemporary structure of steel and glass. The museum's collection includes paintings, works on paper, sculpture, photography, mixed media, video, furniture and contemporary studio glass covering a diverse range of styles and periods. A few of the well-known artists whose work is represented in the Hunter include Thomas Cole, Fitz Henry Lane, Winslow Homer, Robert S. Duncanson, Mary Cassatt, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, John Marin, Thomas Hart Benton, Helen Frankenthaler, Louise Nevelson, Jack Beal, George Segal, Duane Hanson, Robert Rauschenberg, Sam Gilliam, and Andy Warhol. The Hunter Museum is a 501 (C) 3 Non-Profit charitable institution.

“Peaceful, elegant and wonderful artwork”
Reviewed 29 June 2014 via mobile

I loved this layout. You can go at your own pace as the exhibits are not too spread out but all interconnected so if there's a chatty annoying couple you can always avoid and come back around. The artwork itself currently has a contemporary exhibit and permanently has an 1880-1900's exhibit along with a pre 1900's exhibit. I found it delightful and would love to return soon.

Thank Kristin F

“Nice Museum of American Art with river views.”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

The museum sits on a bluff overlooking a river. There is plenty of parking, and several sculptures are located outside.

I believe the admission fee was around $10 per person which we thought was reasonable. The museum showcases American art from the 1800's to present day. The exhibits are arranged in chronological order and they provide you with a fairly detailed map of the museum layout so you can view the exhibits in chronological order if you wish. Most of the pieces are paintings but there are a few pieces of glassware, pottery, etc. from the earlier periods.

It took us about 2 hours to go through, and we had a very nice, and air conditioned visit. A nice way to spend a warm afternoon.

“A Real Gem”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

This museum is located on a cliff overlooking a river in downtown Chattanooga. Part of it is in an old family mansion. The art collection is substantive and worth the effort to see.

“Great ! must see if you love art”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

While I am just a casual kind of art person, I can see a gem in the Hunter Art Museum. It is located on the Chattanooga Bluffs on the Tennessee River. They have all kinds of paintings and glass works of art. The old building is itself a work of art.
