Owner description: One of the finest examples of the Phoenix wrought-iron truss bridges that were build between 1884 and 1923.

This is a great walking bridge! Closed to vehicles long ago, then reworked with wood to become the most beautiful walking bridge in America! Sometimes, there are musicians, sometimes just friends laughing and enjoying each other. The north end of the bridge ends in a great park with a carousel and kid-friendly fountain. Put the kids in their bathing suits and make a cool evening of it! Or, leave the children with a sitter and make it a romantic evening!

The Walnut Street Bridge is a Chattanooga historic landmark. Several years back, it was slated for demolition, but locals gathered together to get it saved. It has been a walking bridge only for the last couple of decades or more. It is a very popular spot to walk (incl. w/your dog-I think they still provide plastic bags in case you need to clean up after your canine family member). It is a great place to view the downtown scenery as it crosses the Tennessee River. It is well lit at night too so it's a pretty safe area then as well. I've been there at various times over the years from early morning to mid day to later at night. Good place to view downtown fireworks during holidays or during Chattanooga's famous Riverbend Festival.

What a fun thing to do, walk across an old bridge which is now pedestrian/bike to get GREAT views of the Tennessee River, when you get across be sure to walk to Cooledge Park and ride the wonderful old carousel (only $1.00 per ride) for the young and "young at heart".

We walked over many times during our stay, its great not to worry about cars, flowers are beautiful along the way. Next time we hope to rent bikes, they have where you can pay for a bike all day and leave it at different spots around town. I think it was $6.00 a day.

My family and I walked across the bridge both in the daytime and at night. The quaint shops were fun to browse in on the other side of the bridge and clumpys ice-cream is a must stop!
