The dam is a very nice/quiet place to visit. Very scenic but the visitor's center is closed until april so be aware of this before you go. I would recommend this if in the area as the natural area is so nice and scenic.

Beautiful location with great scenery, mountain biking, hiking trails, picnic tables etc. Site is a TVA power generating plant using pumped storage to generate power. Visitor Center is closed until April 2014 but enough exhibits to understand how power is generated. Well maintained, good roads. Would be great for a family for the day.

We are currently staying at RV Mountain RV Park and drove to the dam yesterday. There is a breathtaking few of the city and the Tennessee River. It is very peaceful at the lookout spot and the drive around the reservoir is also breathtaking. It is an excellent spot for pictures and well worth the time and additionally, it is free. There are walking trails and biking trails.

Here is another reason why I hate the people who attacked us in 2001, and our country's reaction to the attacks. This used to be an incredible place to visit. Yes, today it is still a beautiful site with lots of wildlife and picnic areas. The view of the Tennessee River gorge from the observation platform is gorgeous.

But before 9/11, retired TVA volunteers used to give free tours of the hydro plant inside the mountain. When the TVA control center needs peak power on a summer afternoon, the computerized plant goes from zero to full capacity in 90 seconds. The reservoir atop the mountani feeds the turbines, which are in an underground chamber at the foot of the mountain. At night the process is reversed and water is pumped back up.

I really miss the tour, going over 1,000 feet down an elevator shaft to the pedestrian access tunnels. What a cool facility. I hope that someday TVA will offer the tours again. Evidently they consider it to be too much of a security risk.
