“Very Nice Campground”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2014

The campsites are clean and shady, The tent-pad is level and flat. The restrooms are in good working order and clean. The campground was fairly quiet. It was not crowded at the time we visited. There is access to many hiking trails into some of the most beautiful parts of the Great Smokey National Park here. Self check-in worked well upon our arrival. The staff was friendly, courteous and helpful. This is more a place to enjoy the natural beauty and peacefulness of the mountain environment, than commercial tourist attractions.

Room Tip: All of the campsites are good. It's just a matter of how close you want to be to the restrooms.

We spend 3 days at a group site in Cosby campground, the the tent sites and picnic table sites were perfect. The restrooms were immaculate and cleaned every day. Rangers were very helpful and informative. Can't wait to go back!!

We didn't actually camp here. We drove to it early one morning as a day trip from our vacation cabin to hike and picnic. It was a lovely drive, and we say about 20 wild turkeys on our drive in. The campground is beautiful. There is lots of water that the kids threw rocks in, looked for critters and just enjoyed playing in. There are lots of camping spots as well as lots of picnic spots. There were several large pavilions that you could call and reserve. It was so nice. It was off the beaten path and not congested and busy like the other spots we went to in the smokies. We could sit at a picnic table and the kids just ran around and played. It really is a gem. There are also several hiking trials. One leading to the Appalachian trail that we did. It was about 6 miles round trip, and we also hiked a tiny bit on the Appalachian trial just to say that we could, so that takes a while.

This is a great campground for tent camping. Unlike many of the other campgrounds in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, most of the sites here are tent-only, so there are not dozens of RVs, and traffic is light. We came on Friday afternoon of Labor Day weekend and 90% of the spots were available - we were able to take our pick! It did get busier as the weekend went on, but did not fill up all the way (even on a holiday weekend!). Also compared to other campgrounds at the park, there is a lot of space between sites, so you feel like you have more privacy. There is a creek nearby, however, it is not running through the campground like at Elkmont, for example. There are many excellent hiking trails of varying difficulty right off the campground. It's about a thirty minute drive to Gatlinburg. There are several bathrooms with flush toilets and cold running water. We would stay here again!

Room Tip: Site B63 was a great choice with a wooded area behind the site!

Cosby Campground is easily our favorite place to car tent camp! It's clean, usually quiet, most campsites are private and it's almost never full even in the summer. There is great hiking and trail running available and multiple places to jump in the creek for a refreshing swim/bath. We have always had good luck at getting a private campsite that is close, but not too close to the bathrooms.

Every campsite has a good fire ring, picnic table, flat tent pads and access to bathrooms. The camp hosts are super nice and make the rounds enough to keep things quiet. We use this as a base camp to do long, all-day hikes. You can get to Mt. Cammerer, Maddron Bald, Hen Wallow Falls and the AT with great views to be had! This is bear country, we've seen bears on three different hikes, so be safe by making noise and bringing a bear bell.

We highly recommend it for couples like us looking for a great base camp from which to hike or trail run. Just don't take our favorite campsite!

Oh and if you want a treat, go to Carver's Orchard and Apple House for awesome local apples, produce and fresh apple butter for breakfast. Carver's appears like a mirage out of the rural landscape around the Cosby area. It saved us one rainy weekend when our tent was leaking.

Stayed at this campground twice, once just before its season ended (obviously it was quiet) and then this June(2013).

We were prepared for it to be very busy, but it was nice and quiet again. There had been a tornado and Loop B was completely closed. We arrived on a Saturday, and by Sunday afternoon through Wednesday there will only about 10 other campers. It was great.

Cosby is about 30 minutes from the Gatlinburg entrance to the Smokies, but if you like to be remote and away from the crowds, this is the perfect campground.

Camp hosts were very friendly and helpful.

Love this campground! Nice sites, most are peaceful and large enough for privacy. A picnic table and fire pit are provided and now that my backpacking days are on hold, love the availability of a clean bathroom (with cold water) within a reasonable walk. Many great trails off of the campground and the sound of the Cosby creek is music to all ears. Only a few reservations are accepted so first come availability can be tricky with a group but such a great place it's worth the effort. We actually chose this campground to avoid the Gatlinberg area but for folks who want to do the tourist thing , you are only about 30 mins away. Been here about 14 times in 15 years and plan to keep it up. There is a little market outside the park entrance but better to bring what you need with you.
