Owner description: The Cowan Railroad Museum represents the railroad that has been an integral part of the city since 1849 when construction began on boring a railroad tunnel through the mountain two miles southeast of town. The Cumberland Mountain Tunnel was finished in 1852 before the railroad actually made it to Cowan from Nashville. The town, the railroad and the tunnel still exist today. In support of that endeavor and later frequent trains through this region, a substantial frame depot was built in 1904, and that building is where the museum now houses its collection for your enjoyment. View railroad artifacts and memoriabilia with a step back in time. Thousands of papers and books make it a must-see place for railroad historians.Free admission, but donations gladly accepted. All volunteer organization is open May through October, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm; Sundays from 1 to 4 pm.

Interesting local railroad history. A Sign Board inside the building names the railroad's employees.

This was a neat place to visit in a small town with not a lot more to do. My husband and I visited the museum while we were in town for a weekend away and found it to be an interesting little place. This was my first time ever seeing a telegraph machine with morse code and how it worked. Also we were able to walk around on a couple train cars sitting on display and see some old train tickets from 1930s - 1980s. Our kids would have enjoyed it as well if they had been with us, so we are planning to take a day trip in the future with them to go back.

Excellent place to take the grandbabies! My grand son loves trains, we spent all afternoon just wandering on and off the real train. The rail tracks are right next to Museum so when the real trains cross through the town of Cowan they blow their horns and the kids just squeal!

This is a quality museum for the family. Small and just now getting off the ground, it affords an intimate look at the RR industry in Middle TN. Nice displays of how the system operated over the years.
