The HSCR is located in SE Tennessee next to the Cherokee National Forest border. This general region has some excellent hiking in addition to rock climbing, white water and scenic rafting. There are numerous places, both public and privately owned, to camp whether its tent, cabin, or in an RV. Don’t get me wrong, those are some great activities, but the restoration of Gee Creek Campground is the greatest testament of the region. That campground (which has a clean bath house and warm water) was nearly wiped out by a pine beetle infestation. We all know that camping without shade just doesn’t cut it. Recently, I returned after a 5-year hiatus to discover that the state and federal forestry services had spurred a restoration project. The results: a beautiful campground full of young hardwoods. Another great addition to the area is the Hiwassee Scenic Railroad which offers scenic trips through the Cherokee National Forest, you can either board at the depot in nearby Etowah or at the ranger’s station/visitor’s center at Gee Creek.
