Review of Bight of the Bend - CLOSED

Bight of the Bend
Price range: US$9 - US$24
Description: A Middle Tennessee native and a graduate of Lipscomb University in Nashville and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, Chef Kent mastered finance and economics. His business interests took him back to Africa a number of times, most recently to Burundi in Central Africa where he served as the managing director of a local bank before he embarked on his career as pitmaster. As always, he found himself in the kitchen usually with a fine bourbon or glass(es) of wine enjoying great food with friends. Kent has traveled as an explorer and humanitarian aid worker to many parts of Latin America, East Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, discovering, among other things, that nothing captures the culture of a place quite like its food. In 2013, Kent started Bight of the Bend in Gainesboro, TN which eventually earned accolades from pit masters, judges, and local newspapers. Today, Bight of the Bend has morphed into The Blue Pig to embrace all the barbecue favorites with the addition of other great southern dishes including an Oyster Bar. The flavors experienced at The Blue Pig will take you on an adventure to a unique, storied reflection of Kent’s life and those who influenced his repertoire of spice around the world from learning culinary skills from Turkey’s Top Chef, learning and sharing recipes in rural African/Asian villages, sometimes avoiding gunfights, or just enjoying wine, it’s cheer, & great dinners with culinary fanatics around the world. The spices experienced are a direct result of personal life experiences by Kent & his friends around the world.

Bight of the Bend, the Smokehouse with the blue pig on the facade offers excellent food at very reasonable prices. All is made in-house with best quality products, the menu is small but attractive and still hard to choose from. The servings are generous, the sides are delicious and the sauces...ooohh the sauces will make you lick the bowls!
Bring your own wine or choose from the beer menu, have a chat with the owner about his passion for food from around the world and get ready for a memorable treat. You will not regret it!

My wife and I went on a suggestion from a co-worker, and it was fabulous. We had been told the food was really good and had read reviews on their facebook page, but you never really know until you try it. If you're going to drive to Gainesboro to eat, you really should try the Bight. Their menu is small since the owner/chef tries to offer quality food at a reasonable price, and boy does he deliver. The ribs are dry-rubbed, with a delicious sauce on the side. They are the best dry-rubbed ribs I've had, and I eat a lot of ribs. All the sides are fresh - everything is prepared in-house and you can tell. Everything was delicious and uniquely flavored without at all being over the top. The price of a meal includes 2 sides, and taxes and tip are included, so be aware of this, but even so it was still less than most comparable restaurants for a dinner for 2.
This small restaurant can be easily overlooked due to the larger one around the corner, but it's a must. Sometimes I'll give a place 5 stars because the food is really good and the service is outstanding, but The Bight rates a 5 for both excellent, simple, delicious food as well as great service.
