“Great place to unplug from the world.”
Reviewed 4 September 2011

Our family of two teenagers, my wife, our dog and I just spent a one night stay at Charit Creek Lodge. It was an easy two and a half hour ride from Knoxville. We hiked in on the twin arches trail, the arches are spectacular. The lodge is exactly what the website promised, rustic and relaxing, in a remote setting. The new proprietor and his team did all they could to make our stay enjoyable. We opted for the full service package which included supper and breakfast. The food was good down home comfort food and there was plenty of it. The other guests were fun to talk to and relax with. The rooms while very basic were clean and provided a good nights sleep. Our only complaint was that the price was a little high, but then again we had good family time, ate great food, saw beautiful scenery, met nice people and slept in a log cabin built in 1817 so I all in all it was a good trip. We will definitely go back.

spent one night at charit creek lodge.

Positives:
-food was very tasty and homemade
-woodstove was nice on a cold night in cabin, outdoor fire also possible
-conversation with other travelers at meal times
-quite good hiking around lodge

negatives
-beds were horribly uncomfortable, this was the topic of conversation at breakfast amongst all the overnight guests. I only slept a total of 3 hours.
-I love rustic, but things were a bit run down. Once we were done hiking, it would have been nice to relax and play a board game etc. all of the board games were missing pieces and well used. Time to replace!
-Paid $220 for one night for adult and 2 kids, seemed like a lot based on the accomodations.
-no confirmation of reservations was given although credit card was immediatly processed, I tried calling several days out only to get a busy signal repeatedly.
-We arrived at 3:00 p.m. after a long hike, there wasn't anyone to check us in. This made me a bit nervous, escpecially since I had not been able to contact anyone for days.
after 15 mins wait, someone showed up and checked us in.

We had an amazing weekend at Charit Creek Lodge. We were sent all the information we needed in the mail after we made our reservation, so we would've been prepared even if we hadn't already read it all on their website (which includes information on cabin set up/sharing). The cabin was clean and cozy and the beds very welcoming after a long day on the trail, and the staff made us and our two dogs very welcome. The best part was definitely the hot, homemade, family-style food (very accommodating to vegetarians). It was also nice to sit around the table and share stories with the other guests. Those who complain about it being too rustic (no electricity) or having to hike in (only 0.8 miles the short way) miss the whole point. Stay at a hotel in the city if you want to be babied.

This hostel is in a very nice park, but the rooms were heated with a wood-burning stove, which was too hot on the top bunks and not warm enough on the bottom. Also, the bunk beds were all doubles, and our entire group was asked to share beds. I don't know if this is common or something our trip leader worked out, but we were not crazy about it. Too much money to share a bed. The food was pretty good, but the staff were chilly and inhospitable. I would not return, nor recommend, but if you go, keep your expectations low. It is in a very nice place for hiking, and having to hike in is fun.

Beautiful location-- deep in the Tennessee woods. Food was good and included breakfast and supper. What was not apparent on the websites for this lodge is that the Lodge itself is located in North Central TN-- the "office" which does booking only is in Sevierville. I had "googled" Great Smoky Mts and this site came up. We traveled almost to Knoxville before realizing we were going 75 miles in the wrong direction. Also, the website did not spell out that you need to park at a trailhead and hike in at least 8/10 miles (depending on the trail you use), with all your belongings in tow. Also, you will need to supply your own towels, soap. The cabins ARE rustic = no electricity (kerosene lamp provided). The lodge was a former "hostel" set up for groups-- so there are bunk beds (double sized). Bathroom is separate from cabins/lodge... a bit of a hike (if you are in the cabins apart from the lodge) at 3 AM in the morning!
In spite of this, we enjoyed our stay-- quiet, non-touristy experience with some good hiking trails. Cabins were clean... had screened in porch and a back porch with rockers. Family style meals were very good & allowed us to get to know other folks. We're glad we did it-- but you need to be informed!
