.......unique experience. A small, old house on the corner of Unaka & North Roan with a brick oven, unique menu, unique, way of ordering, and a fabulous vinyl record collection makes for an interesting experience. Reading the reviews, it looked as though many didn't enjoy their experience here, but we didn't fall into that category, although I could see how it could turn into a frustrating experience if it were really crowded or if you are expecting a waiter/waitress to be constantly checking on you.

You come in and there are several pads with menus on them for you to check what you want (and in some cases, DON"T WANT). We opted for a French crust pizza with onions, garlic, red sauce, capicola, smoked beef, mozzarella, onions and spinach. Garlicky, savory, smokey, a little sweet from the red sauce, and a crunchy yet chew crust , it was outstanding, and the leftovers were even better for breakfast the next day. You are free to BYOB, but there are a variety of soft drinks (some unusual) in a cooler that are available. There was Coke available in glass bottles that day, so all was right with the world. We didn't have to wait too long, as we were there at 1:30 in the afternoon, but they have a fabulous record collection that you can browse through and stick on the record player if you choose, and I chose Hendrix's Are You Experienced for a sublime dining experience.

Prices are reasonable for what I considered to be an outstanding, out of the ordinary pizza. Parking would be tough during peak hours, and you need to pay attention to the signs lest you get your vehicle towed away.

Overall, we loved it and plan to do another late lunch here one day soon.

“Alway's Good!”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

Went there with a few of my friends that had not to tried it out in the past four years of being in college. One of my friends absolutely loved the pizza and even asked if they sell their cheese blend. Turns out they do, which she's already bought a few times now. Definitely is one of the top pizza joints in town if you're trying to get out of the franchised restaurants and you can't really beat wood-fire pizza anyways!

“Unique Experience!”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

The best pizza I have ever eaten! You can have your way and desighn your won masterpiece! The building is pretty cool considering it is a small house but needs some serious up keep. Also verry limited parking in rear be carefull with a full size truck or you may get blocked in where you dont have enough space to back out. If youre driving anything other than a car opt for curbside parking.

“Chill atmosphere, good cheesesticks, poor pizza”
Reviewed 31 March 2014 via mobile

After wanting to give scratch a try for several months, we finally made it. For the first timer, figuring out how to order can be a bit daunting. However, the guy working behind the counter was super helpful. The atmosphere according to my eleven year old son is "chill." Coming from a food service background ( 15 years as an executive chef), I enjoyed the laid back experience. however, there is one caveat, if you are offended by course language, don't sit near the pizza prep area. One of the girls had a horrible mouth and didn't seem to mind if anyone heard her. We ordered cheesebread with red sauce and pesto. If you don't mind the grease, it was really good---cheesy and garlicky. The red sauce was really fresh tasting and the pesto was good even if a bit loose. The pizza is where the experience went down hill. Scratch offers a great selection of toppings. All are supposedly house made. The crust is the weak spot in the whole operation. It was to bready and not in a good way. I expect some char on a true wood fired pizza. Ours had minimum char and the texture was almost undercooked. I ended up eating just the toppings off and leaving the crust behind. They also used an excessive amount of cornmeal which gives the crust a sweet corn flavor ( not necessarily a good thing). I feel that need to jack up the temp of there oven and make their crust thinner. This would speed up service and make a better pizza. If you truly want brick oven pizza done right, give smokey mountain pizza in Roan Mountain a try. It is an even bigger dive but with better pizza and the best brownies ever.
