We used to eat at the Peros that was on Kingston Pike years ago. It was delicious. We were disappointed when it closed so when we saw their new place we assumed it would be as good. wrong. We went on a Sunday with friends for lunch. I had one of their brunch offerings which was two eggs over medium and grit cakes. the eggs were crunchy ruffled and one of the yolks was broken. There were two grit cakes which were so salty I could not eat them. Others at the table tasted them and they agreed. The biscuit was warm, but not warm enough to melt the butter. My husband had Veal Parmesan which was tough. Really - Veal is not tough! It was not a busy time as there were only three other tables occupied. Service was very slow. We had to ask for refills of tea and coffee. They have a nice patio area, but the day was too cool to eat outside.
We had never heard of Peros previously, but family members living in Knoxville suggested we give it a try for a late dinner. The menu was predominantly Greek or Italian themed, but some variations from that are also available. I ordered a gyro, with side dish of "Greek potato salad", something I had never heard of when we lived for two years in Greece! The server told me it was a vinegar based potato salad with Greek seasoning, and it actually turned out to be tasty. Two others in our party had souvlaki and another a salad with grilled chicken; everyone thought their selection was fine. My gyro was only average, primarily because the meat was rather bland. Service was good and the restaurant is handicap accessible with lots of parking available.
Went for lunch with a friend on a Saturday. The patio seating was open and it was a beautiful day to be outside. We shared an order of Greek fries from the appetizer menu. They were steak fries with a very little "Greek seasoning" sprinkled on top. I don't usually eat fries and these were OK but nothing special or original or even Greek. The Greek salad said homemade dressing and I found out it was an oil and vinegar base. Perfect! Then it waiter offered to add gyro meat. Perfect! I ordered the small. I got a bowl with less than a cup of iceberg lettuce, some grape tomatoes, feta, two kalamata olives, two pimento stuffed jarred olives, one very hot pepperoncini, a pickle chip, and four strips of some pressed, pre-formed meat. The homemade dressing lacked flavor and just made everything in the cereal size bowl wet. 😞 Was it horrible? No. Was it great? NO. Will I return? No, nothing to go back for and $16 with tip for a glass of water, half an order of fries and a cereal size bowl of flavorless salad seems outrageous.
This is a great place we found on a trip through Knoxville. It's a great mix of Italian, Greek, and American. Gyro was fantastic, and the kids pizza is huge. Can't wait to try it again on a trip back through Knoxville. Great service too
