“Cool experience if you are in Masaya”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

Just don't attempt to walk from the main gate unless it's first thing in the morning! Our taxi dropped us off there, just off the main road and we paid our $5-6 entry fee and set off on the walk. We knew it was a few kilometres but we weren't prepared for the lack of shade and the incline to the top which I believe is around 5 kms in total. It was very hard going in the afternoon heat! The visitors centre / museum which is definitely worth checking out is about 1 km from the main gate and then it's another 4 kms up from there. I would definitely recommend that you drive or catch a taxi if possible.

Once you reach the top you will see a lot of smoke but be patient for the wind to clear and you will get a better view into the crater! It's pretty awesome to be able to peer into an active volcano, but don't expect to see lava or too far down.

The path up to the cross is unfortunately still closed off so you can't get any higher or see much more than the views from the side.

Finish the trip by rehydrating with a fresh coconut for a $1 from the local ladies who have a little stall at the top.

Beautiful view. Noxious fumes limit time that can be spent by volcano. Warning if you have any lung problems

“Once in a Lifetime”

Amazing experience! Standing on top of an active volcano is like nothing else! You can only stay up at the top for a max. of 10 minutes due to it's activity, but that 10 minutes is fantastic! It was really smokey up top but we could see well into the hole. A must if your in the area!

“great views and cheap”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

The park is worth a stop, it costs around $6.00 to get in. The visitors center is interesting, gives a little bit about the history of the area and volcano, but mostly in Spanish.
From the visitors center it's about 4 mile drive to the crater. The volcano erupted slightly in 2012 therefore there is an option to wear hard hats and the walk up to the cross is closed as a precaution. The views are amazing, surreal to look down into active crater and smelling the sulfur fumes. No lava, but the fumes themselves are an awesome view. If you walk the opposite direction from the crater you can see the entire valley and still some bare areas, blackened with lava from the last large eruption from over 30 years ago. There are few vendors walking around selling souvenirs but generally not a very touristy area as opposed to Arenal in Costa Rica. I would highly recommend visiting this park if you are into geology and volcanos.

“Picturesque”

Nice views, solid museum, and nice to take a short hike, Be warned though, you cannot see lava and anyone who tells you that you can is wasting your time. Instead go during the day when you can see the vistas into the distance which are quite pretty
