We visited this volcano as part of our Monkey Tours Costa Rica & Nicaragua tour. The time here felt rushed - we did minimal hiking and were able to see both volcanoes at this site, but it would have been nice to have more time here. The active volcano was a fun experience.

I used Erick's tours from Granada and took a sunset tour. It was amazing being up here at sunset and just seeing how the sun looked like it was from another planet through the smoke coming out of the volcano. The views of the surrounding area were also gorgeous and the park ranger was very informative. I recommend this highly.

There is such an amazing natural power going on here. From the top you can look out over the entire area of the park. The volcano and the park are quite small. New and old lava flows can be seen. Looking to Masaya and it's lake one can see the lava flow that ran into the water, altering the area of the lake. That is fascinating to see and imagine. It is hard to believe this non formidable hill is one of the most active volcanos. You may well find it much smaller than you expected. It is easy to look into the bowels of the earth from the top. It is also quite haunting to do so. The sulphur smell is fleeting, depending on the wind direction. We signed up for a night tour in order to see the glowing lava, but the smoke hindered the view. If this is the case the park allows you to came back free of charge for another chance, which is more than fair on their part. This tour also included a night time hike through a lava cave and a general talk about the geology and history of the volcano. You do not need to do a tour to look into the smoking crater during daytime opening hours. The night tour is after hours, to see the glowing lava. Look into this, for it is a good deal.

Just don't attempt to walk from the main gate unless it's first thing in the morning! Our taxi dropped us off there, just off the main road and we paid our $5-6 entry fee and set off on the walk. We knew it was a few kilometres but we weren't prepared for the lack of shade and the incline to the top which I believe is around 5 kms in total. It was very hard going in the afternoon heat! The visitors centre / museum which is definitely worth checking out is about 1 km from the main gate and then it's another 4 kms up from there. I would definitely recommend that you drive or catch a taxi if possible.

Once you reach the top you will see a lot of smoke but be patient for the wind to clear and you will get a better view into the crater! It's pretty awesome to be able to peer into an active volcano, but don't expect to see lava or too far down.

The path up to the cross is unfortunately still closed off so you can't get any higher or see much more than the views from the side.

Finish the trip by rehydrating with a fresh coconut for a $1 from the local ladies who have a little stall at the top.

Beautiful view. Noxious fumes limit time that can be spent by volcano. Warning if you have any lung problems
