Came here for 2 nights on an escapes.ie voucher. 2 nights B&B. We upgraded to a second floor Lakeview room for an extra charge of 15eur per room, per night. Room had a lovely view and small French balcony. The room itself was dark, with old style furniture, old fashioned carpet etc. Some people love that style. Also thin walls - as it was a bank holiday weekend, there was a party next door. Comfy bed, spotless sheets. Basic bathroom supplies. An iron in the room, basic tea/coffee facilities and a safe that didn't work as someone had left it closed. We went to reception about the safe and they don't have a skeleton code in the hotel, so they would have to get someone in to get the safe open. This is quite good as it means that staff have no access to the safes. We had some outdoor stuff planned for the day so I was able to leave my jewellery in the safe at reception. We had soup in the bar as we were going to a recommended restaurant later. Food was fine, I was a bit wary after the reviews but it was fine. The breakfast was delicious. They don't have a buffet hot counter but take your order and cook to order. My fiancé had the full Irish and I just had the bits I wanted from a full Irish. Better breakfast than a lot of higher star hotels, it was really good quality. I think the best scrambled eggs I have ever had in a hotel. Unfortunately the weather when we were there was horrendous, floods etc so there is really nothing to do in the hotel when the weather is bad. It is set on its own off the main road, so no where is really walkable. The tv is pretty bad, 2 stations. I figured out the safe code though and got it open - a warning to all, not to use stupid safe codes like 1234, 4321, 1111 as on my 3rd attempt to guess the code, it opened...
Overall a nice 3 star, excellent breakfast and beautiful location but nothing to do when the weather is bad (in fairness, it was extremely bad weather we had, not just a bit of rain) unless you are happy to sit in the bar drinking until it improves. Very friendly staff as well, from reception to bar staff, cleaning staff and restaurant staff at breakfast.
