This hotel and amazing!!! The staff are all really really lovely and go out of their way for you to help you in any way they can. The food in the bar and restraunt is supberb and is not too expensive. The rooms are really comfortable and spotlessly clean. Would live here if I could!!! Really worth a long or short stay in.

I recently stayed at the highland hotel with my wife and 3 month old son.

As per other comments the decor and bedding are dated but the cleanliness and friendly staff make it a very comfortable family run hotel.

We had a meal in the hotel one of the nights and really enjoyed the food. The fully breakfasts are also very tasty.

My only gripe was the room we had was an adjoining room and we could hear everything through the separating door. On a few occasions the guest occupying the room was watching tv and it sounded like the tv was actually in our room. So if you have not specifically booked an adjoining room avoid rooms with adjoining doors.

The Highlands Hotel lies at one end of the street that is Glenties. Worn, but the room were clean and the beds were very good. Luckily neither one of us are sensitive for sounds because our room faced the street and there was traffic all through the night. Nice and friendly staff. Ok value for money.

First-time visitors may think at first glance that this hotel is very dated. What they should do, is suspend their judgment, settle in and allow themselves time to slow down to Donegal speed. If you arrive at the Highlands anticipating formal "Sir, Madam" service, a spa, minibar, so-called adult channel, continental cuisine and air conditioning, you have come to the wrong place. This is one of the most beautiful and relaxed settings anywhere in Ireland and yet it is one which has not been changed by mass tourism. Glenties in the "real" Ireland.
Once you accept this you will be more than happy with your 80s-style room and the absence of many mod-cons. You will still have everything you need. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the old hotel has a kind of creaking floorboard character which is very warm and genuine. The breakfast will keep you going most of the day, the bar serves gorgeous Guinness (I know, I can testify) and the evening meals are hearty. Best of all, the prices and value for money are astonishing. Glenties is a charming one-street town and there are others like it nearby - check out Ardara. The staff are locals and know their area as you might expect. If you want anything, just ask. A lovely spot and a very friendly place to stay. Once you slow down from the crazy pace of life, you will appreciate what kind of a hotel and area this is.

Room Tip: If you need a bath as opposed to just a shower you might need to ask

4 star hotels could learn a few things from the wonderful , friendly ,welcome we got on arrival at this unpretentious hotel. Aileen welcomed us and showed us to our room. The room was clean with basic comforts including tea making facilities. The ensuite bathroom had plenty of towel & complementary toiletries. After a rest went to the bar area where we had a delicious meal. The starter of goats cheese bruschetta was the best I have ever had . Our mains of sirloin steaks were cooked to our taste and perfect . Breakfast menu was quite extensive and they were happy to vary the menu to suit my needs. We had stayed using a living social offer , but we received top price service. We also had the added pleasure of an evening of great traditional music. This is a real gem of a hotel. Yes it's on the Main Street and may have a bit of traffic noise , but what sells this hotel is that it's family run, and Grainne the owner and her 7 daughters , some who still work in the hotel, make you feel like part of their family. Old fashioned hospitality with excellent cuisine what more can you ask for ? Looking forward to our next visit .

I really couldnt have asked for a hotel with more caring staff and a more beautiful location. My sister has recently had a child and the staff almost "adopted" her as their own. They couldnt do enough to help and were even prepared to look after the baby when we were eating.

Food was well priced and to die for and the rooms were homely and comfortable

If you want to know what a charming place rural Ireland can be, look no further

We stopped for a meal in the Highlands and the food was good, staff were friendly but on entering you go through a time machine back in to the 70s! Don't like the way you have to walk to reception to pay your food bill but the hotel is a pleasant diversion for an hour.
