Finnstown Castle Hotel
Ranked #1 of 2 Hotels in Lucan
Reviewed 7 July 2011

We recently stayed at the Finnstown Hotel with our 3 year old son. The hotel is in a beautiful setting but is more suited to couples. The family room was roughly the size of a suite but was a little outdated. The decor needs updating. There was no dvd player and only one kids tv channel which was more suited to older children. At night when we put our son down to sleep it was almost impossible to stay up and read or watch tv ourselves as the only lamps were beside the bed where our son was sleeping in. We used the swimming pool at the hotel complex but this is in serious need of updating - sealant coming away from the edge of the pool, the changing rooms quite old and dead plants at the side of the pool were not appealing. The chlorine level in the water was actually quite high too. Positives to this hotel were the beautiful gardens, friendly staff and the food in the bar/breakfast were very good.

We arrived on 25 June and were immediately amazed by the drive upto the hotel along a long drive, we thought we may have been at the wrong place, but the Finnstown Hotel is in one of the nicest locations we have ever stayed in. The house is very atttractive from both the exterior and interior. The walls are full of pictures that have a story to tell and there are also lots of nice objects around the house. The ceilings in both the Lounge and Dining Room are stunning and the ceiling rose in the reception area was amazing (the style of this hotel is why we choose it, character throughout). Breakfast great really all you could want, nothing was too much trouble, Freda in the mornings was great always very happy to help us and gave us alot of information about travelling around and so did the Reception Staff thank you to Ash for posting our Postcards for us.

Yes, you are out of the main city area of Dublin, but that's what we wanted (we were travelling with an Autistic child and needed a quiet location) but great to go into Dublin for all the usually tourist things to do. There is a bus route (25B) that travels directly from the end of the drive of the hotel, that will take you directly into Dublin. Also, a train station in Adamstown (15/20 minute walk to Station from Hotel) that takes you directly to Heuston Station and then you can get a tram or bus to the City Centre. Well worth the 12 euro we paid for a return for 3 of us which also included the tram and bus fare too.

We thought about hiring a car but decided against it. If you use the very good, regular bus, tram and train system you won't need a car to get into Dublin at all. If you want to tour then yes you should, but look around don't get stung at the airport like we nearly did. What should have been 147euro online with all insurances, rose to 289 euro at the counter after all other add ons had been put on, we walked away as we weren't prepared to pay it. The Dublin Bus No: 747 takes you straight into the City Centre with stops along the way to Heuston Station 6 Euros single. If you do the Dublin bus tour you get a 2day pass(includes tour and Hop on Hop off for 2 days) and the Airlink included for 19 Euro, stands at the Airport and on O'Connell Street in the Dublin Bus office. Taxis from Airport between 35 to 40 Euro into Dublin.

We will be back to the Finnstown House Hotel and will make a longer break next time. Also, check out the Spa and Pool very good. A swim when you have had a long day great. Our room was on the lower floor (basement) it was fine we had a small seating area where we had coffee in the morning before breakfast.

Thank you to everyone.

This hotel was a delight. Old fashioned service with contemporary rooms and fine dining. Fantastic facilities. Good location. Easy reach of the city but with a country 'feel'. Clean and comfortable with elegant furnishing and interesting artefacts. The staff were very helpful with a 'can do' approach. We hope to return again soon

We stayed here 6 years ago on honeymoon and decided to return. Would our fond memories be tarnished. Not at all. Staff remembered us from our last visit...
After having booked the hotel we rang to make arrangements for our stay. Chatting to Edwina and Aisling felt as though we were chatting to friends, not employees of the hotel. All our requirements were no trouble at all to facilitate.
On arrival at the hotel we were greeted and treated as though we were the most important guests at the hotel, a feeling that others staying there got about themselves in conversations we had. This continued throughout our four day stay. Breakfast and bar menu excellent. Room facilities very comfortable.
The hotel manager, Barry, introduced himself to us and was keen to ensure everything was as expected throughout our stay.
Fantastic old house and outbuildings and service from a forgotten age.
A big thank you to those mentioned, also to Bernard and Jude and everyone else.

Only one note of concern. The leisure pool is overdue a makeover although I am sure this matter is in hand knowing the team at Finnstown.

Thanks for a wonderful stay. See you soon. Alison, Richard & Matthew.

Room Tip: Ask at reception. Always pleased to help.

Stayed in Finnstown House as a wedding guest in May 2011. The hotel was absolutely first class. Firstly it is an ideal location so close to the city centre yet a haven of tranquility. The gardens with their manicured lawns, fountains and resident peacocks are beautiful and we enjoyed a drink al fresco in the evening. The wedding reception itself was flawless and the food excellent. The lamb was the leanest and most
succulent we have eaten. The room was nicely furnished (we were in the main hotel) the bathroom was a little small but spotless and modern. Staff at check in and check out were very attentive. Breakfast was lovely and the manager was very attentive to everyone there. In summary, there was a nice atmosphere in the hotel, the surroundings were beautiful and all this for €100 B+B..Highly recommended.

The good points:
Nice food in the bar. We ate there for the two nights and I have to say the food was lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful. They have a nice kids menu which isn’t just nuggets and chips which was refreshing.
The drawing rooms and bar area’s in the main hotel are lovely.
The majority of the grounds are nice surrounding the hotel.
Mixed feeling points (which are mainly to do with value for money):
When booking Finnstown we were told we wouldn’t be in the main house so to be fair I wasn’t expecting to be, but the room we were in was called a ‘Golf Suite’ across from the house and it is understandable why we were put there as we were a family of 2 adults and 2 children but it wasn’t exactly a nice room. It was clean with a double bed, single bed and camp bed – camp bed though? Im not sure if they have anywhere else to accommodate families but it does feel like some hotels just shove families into the less than nice rooms and in hotel was no different.
On the package we booked, it included hot chocolate on arrival for the kids and tea/coffee for the adults. I only remembered about the offer the day after check in so that lunch time I asked for the hot chocolate and tea. I was totally mortified having to ask but I thought why not seeing as we were supposed to get it. The receptionist filled out a slip of paper to state the kids got free hot chocolate and never put down the tea/coffee. Had to ask again for that. Morto. But she apologies and wrote it down. I just wish they gave it to us without having to go beg for it.
We had a few issues like above where things were advertised but never came. Wasn’t that big of a deal but I think now a day’s people really want to get what they paid for and in some instances e.g. with the breakfast there was no hash browns as advertised and there was no vegetarian sausage as advertised with the veggie breakfast. The thing that really annoyed us was that we weren’t told about this until we asked where they were – maybe they thought we wouldn’t notice but I don’t think that is very good customer service. There was also no jelly with the ‘jelly and ice cream’ which accompanied the kids meals. The first night no one mentioned it, just gave us two bowls of ice cream – my daughter instantly wondering where was the jelly. The second night, same thing again – no jelly, just ice cream but this time we were not just expected to ignore the fact that the jelly wasn’t in the bowl, the waiter apologised and said they had no jelly.
On a different note, we used the pool and the kids loved it. It is small (and the water is VERY warm) but they didn’t mind.
All in all, probably wouldn't stay again.

Dear IrelandTwiggy,
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Finnstown Country House Hotel. I am sorry the standard of the bedroom did not match your expectations. We try to allocate the best rooms to match guests needs and am truly sorry we failed on this occassion. We are well known by our guests for our food and service and am delighted you found these areas of the hotel to be above par. I was dissappointed to hear we did not have all items on the menu during your visit nor was there the offer of the tea/ coffee and hot hot chocolate that you had already paid for as part of the package. It is not our intention to have guests looking for items that are included with their stay. We have carried out full training with our reception team on this package to make sure this does not happen again in the future, we have also re-checked all our menu offerings to make sure all extras that are on the menu's are available to the guests as stated.

Thank you for your comments and I am positive that due to your feedback we can continue to improve. If you have any further comments or are staying again please do not hesitate to contact me at the hotel on 016010700

Stayed in Finnstown as a wedding guest, when we first checked in we found our room to be located in another building, this was not a problem in itself, however the room stank of stale cigarette smoke!!!!!! We were allocated a different room number 42 in the main house all seemed perfect. After a superb wedding, food and service were excellent we returned to our room about 1am looking forward to a nice restful sleep, (we don’t get away much with two small kids at home) – think again the noise from air-locked pipes in our bathroom was horrendous!!!!! My husband figured out at 5am that leaving the hot tap running a little solved the problem, resulting in no hot water for a shower in the morning. Staff the next morning weren’t too bothered with our complaint, I will not be recommending or returning to Finnstown House in the future.
