“Great - we would return”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 May 2014 via mobile

We have just had three days at Renvyle. The weather was glorious and that makes such a difference. We were given the large suite 84 and really enjoyed the space, although it is separate to the hotel. Not a problem in fine weather.
Rowing on the lake, walking the beach and golf course, feeding the ducks, watching the sun set were all highlights.
The gardens needed some TLC and the pool was certainly not ready for use - but that did not bother us, although we were surprised as it was just before a bank holiday weekend.
The two musicians in the bar on Friday night were good but would have been much better without amplifiers and speaker in such a small bar.

Being a family style hotel always means there can be a conflict between those with babies and young children and those adults who prefer a quieter setting. I thing Renvyle needs to apply a firmer policy so that adults can be sure to have an infant free environment in the restaurant and bar after a specified time. (Kelleys in Rosslare is a good example)

Although the Renvyle has been here for many decades, it has been kept up to date very well, but still maintains a sense of its history everywhere you turn. In modern terms you'd call this a resort, since it has its own golf course and lake, with fishing and boating, an herb garden, a small play-yard, and on and on... and a snooker room (adults only!). A painting class was in progress in one room during our stay. Guests ranged from families to hikers to old folks, all of them interesting. Food in the dining room was gourmet-plus for breakfast and dinner, served by an attentive and friendly staff. (We bought their cookbook.) The pub offered snacks and smaller dishes all afternoon. Our room including the bathroom was first-class. A bit of a drive to get to, but well worth it.
Accessibilty: The entire facility is ground-floor level, although there are also 2nd floor rooms up a flight of stairs. The entrance at first seems a bit narrow, but it is a split doorway whose 2nd half can be opened up if necessary.

Room Tip: Our first-floor room facing the back of the property had a large window overlooking a peaceful lands...

Excellent food from nearby sources (fish, seafood, steak, lamb, vegetables), cooked to perfection and served by very well trained charming staff, located on the beautiful Connemara Atlantic coast, with backdrop of mountains and set in its own estate with its lake in front Our 8 days there was just what we needed as respite from the trauma of moving house; we cannot wait to return..

My husband and I arrived at the Hotel mid morning last Monday. We were welcomed as if we were very close and long lost relatives.
Apologies were given ( and accepted) because our room was not ready. A large and very satisfied Wedding party were checking out.
We were invited to sit between two turf fires (month of May) and served with tea / coffee and warmed scones, accompanied by raspberry jam and cream - on the house!
Dinner was to die for, both in quality and presentation.
Everybody talks to one another and tells of what they have done during the day.
I overheard a Englsh woman telling all and sundry that this place is the most wonderful Hotel in the world - absolutely divine, my dear, were her words and we couldn't agree more.
It drizzled from arrival to departure and we barely noticed!

Room Tip: try to book one of the suites. bed nos are 75 and 77

In these recessionary times, hotels need to have a U.S.P to stand out.
I sent my parents to this hotel as a present for their 44th anniversary. When booking, I told the receptionist this and she assured me that she would remember. However, nothing at all was done to make my parents feel special - this could have been something as small as a complimentary drink or a candle on a dessert.
I would not stay here myself, nor would I recommend it to others.

This place is a paradox. If you go there for great food and service you will not be disappointed. The restaurant is first class. The location is out of the way stunning. The service at reception is fine. From there things go downhill.
Before I go further I want to state that we have visited Ireland 8 times in the past 10 years and had stayed in many of the “castle/manor house/renovated properties” and understand the difficulty retrofitting modern conveniences into an old building. Also, we do not have expectations that older properties will meet United States standards. We also understand the difference between “quaint/rustic/charming” and “old/tired/in need of repair”.
Renvyle falls into the latter category. It needs a major overhaul. The rooms (this trip we stayed in both the new wing and the old house) need major renovation. The grounds are not as advertised. They are in desperate need of weeding, pruning and clearing. The pool is a disaster. In fairness, it was May when we visited and I can understand that it was too early in the season to be opened but is was a mess. The cover was broken and not installed. The pool contained just about everything except clean water. Old chairs and odd pieces of pool equipment scattered about. The “boats” by the lake looked like they had not been taken out for months, all had water in them, three inches deep. Whether it’s a lack of management, lack of funds, lack of personnel, who knows. Regardless a major investment is needed.
The place has great potential. Its saving grace is location, the restaurant and the ambiance of the lobby, bar, sitting room with peat fires. With these three features we give Renvyle an average rating, but it’s expensive for the value you receive. There are a number of similar places that we have stayed in previously that are better value.
Will we go back? Maybe.

amazing property in the middle of no where, next stop New York.
we did not stay at the hotel but had a lovely evening meal at this wonderful peaceful place.
We were staying in Galway & on the recommendation of family friends & after reading Rala O'Reillys book a life in rugby (Rala is the Ireland & British & Irish lions rugby bag man) who has travelled the world staying in the best hotels & he calls Renvyle his home from home we thought that we would take the 1& half hour drive from Galway to Renvyle and we were not disappointed. the hotel is at the end of a peninsula, set in 200 acre of land, right on the Atlantic coast. it is a place to relax & un-wind.
front of house staff are very knowledgeable, friendly & professional, the service is just right for this relaxed placed, not to pushy, just very friendly & pleasant.
the food in the restaurant was excellent & good value, 5 courses for 49 euro. their Irish beef was cooked to perfection, I like mine medium to well done & my wife likes the beef as blue as the chef dare & she was not disappointed.
my only complaint would be that we stayed in Galway & not at Renvyle House, but do not worry I wont make that mistake again.
