“Quaint and rustic cottage in the most spectacular location”

If you are looking for modern glamour, this cottage is not for you! However, if you are looking for a holiday in a peaceful, stunning, rural location by the sea in a property bursting with Irish charm, then this place is a definite 'must'.

Although rustic (the pictures of the property are totally accurate), the cottage is not without mod cons - flat screen TV, DVD player, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge / freezer and microwave. The beds were very comfy and the electric heaters kept the place very warm. However the highlight for us was being able to switch off the heaters and light a real peat fire - all provided free of charge by the owner who was absolutely lovely.

Liked best: The stunning setting and open peat fuelled fire
Liked least: the shower due to the property having extremely low water pressure

“Classic Connemara cottage in an idyllic location”

This classic Connaught cottage, with its three main rooms and central fireplace is a perfect escape from the overblown bungalows that blight the landscape of this exceptionally scenic area. We spent a fortnight at Dolan and found it exactly to our taste, and a privilege to live close to the land in this traditional locality. Nothing in the copy relating to this property constituted a misrepresentation and we found everything to be properly functional, though you have to give allowance for details like the characteristically low water pressure. We are non-smokers, and it was a surprise to read later that smoking is allowed at the cottage, but we didn’t perceive a smell of tobacco. At the time of our visit the weather was dominantly north-westerly, and not over-warm, so we were grateful for the background heat from the storage radiators which we supplemented with the open fire on several evenings – as much because we enjoy an open fire or stove as a real need. Building and maintaining a turf fire is an art, and the chimney was prone to smoke a little, but that is down to the prevailing wind and the construction of the fireplace, which has not changed since the house was in permanent occupation. Finding a cottage where free turf, gas and electricity are provided in the rental is unusual, and generous considering the very reasonable rent. The place was clean, furnishings were perfectly serviceable, the settee comfortable, the linen perfect and the bed comfortable. If I lived there, I’d pay attention to the gutter on the kitchen extension, which is possibly why the toilet wall is a tad damp – but it doesn’t grow moss as suggested previously.

The best features were not in the brochure. The friendly wave in the early morning from the farmer checking the adjacent flock of sheep. The hares frolicking on the pasture. Walking a few yards for a morning swim in the fantastic bay. Captivating geology. Fresh Pollack caught offshore and delivered to the door as a gift. The extra day’s stay we were offered because the next tenants were arriving on the following Monday. Breege calling in person to see if all was well.

Maybe this is not for the international jet-set, but it's traditional Connemara through and through.

“Interior in dreadful state of disrepair and overwhelming smell of fire/cigarette smoke”

Moss growing on interior toilet wall. Dreadful smell of smoke inside. Cracked mirrors in bathroom and bedroom. Terrible condition of furniture. It is a very old property, but not looked after and needs a lot of work to get it up to an acceptable standard. Bed Linen was clean.

We are grateful for your feedback, which is always appreciated and are sorry you were disappointed with the cottage. It is described on our website as 'simple and compact' and is very basic, but we do have several clients that go back to it every year and absolutely love it, the location next to the beach being it's main attraction. However, we are very sorry you were disappointed once again.
