“Can't beat the Benefits”

We lucked out on this incredible find at the end of June. We wanted to be off of the main tourist bus route and also have access to hiking up Mount Brandon. This was the PERFECT place for it. The trail starts from across the street. The rooms were quaint and clean and ours had a spectacular view of the water. It was also quiet. Breakfast and sitting rooms are quite comfy and bright. The staff was friendly knowledgeable and accommodating. One of our favorite bonuses was the pub next door - excellent food, wait staff and of course, walking distance home :). Oh, and the price for the value of the room and breakfast was yet another benefit.

I would highly recommend this little gem of a place. I had a lovely stay in the L’oft’ - one of two beautiful adaptable spacious self contained parts of the hostel. . Clean warm and bright with everything one could ask for., Mount Brandon hostel is perfectly situated for access to Fermoyle beach, (longest one in Ireland. ) Brandon point, where there were about 12 dolphins playing, . Loch a duin, also to the mountain after which it is called. and Dingle itself. over O Conner's pass - where I stopped for an ice cream to take in the whole surrounding views. amazing.… bike rides, diving, and country markets as well as other activities where nearby. and some live music in the village. Situated just at the waters edge It would make an ideal location for small group retreats. Micheal the owner is very welcoming and accommodating. worth checking out… I first saw it when a friend commented on their Facebook page . https://www.facebook.com/MountBrandonHostel?fref=ts will definitely go back.

Room Tip: Loft spacious and great for family - or as a sacred space for group retreat. I also saw the apartme...

I just returned from a 3 nights stay in Cloghane with 26 school children on a Gaisce Challenge weekend. The owner (Michael) is very friendly and helpful and so is everyone else working there, especially Mary. I have travelled all around Ireland with many school groups and this is one of the more positive experiences I have had. The value for the hostel was very good, the communication from the owner and workers was excellent prior to the visit and the hostel itself on arrival did not disappoint. It was well furbished, the wi-fi worked great, the showers were good and the rooms were warm. The kitchen facilities were excellent and the two washing machines and two dryers were great for the wet weekend we had. The pub next door (O’Donnells) gave us a great deal on a group dinner-large portions for a very good price. The owner and workers were very welcoming. Will definitely be back to the hostel and the pub.

Myself and 20 of my friends spent amazing weekend on 6th and 7th December 2013. We did the Brandon Mountain walk despite misty weather, so it was so great to come back to warm and cosy hostel after that. The location is also perfect for water-lovers, the beach is nearby and the surfing beach is very close.
The room are very cosy, all with the bathroom. I loved the pretty living room with the fireplace.
Great and affordable destination!

Room Tip: The is 2-rooms family suite there with the living room and small kitchen. Perfect for family or peop...

Comfortable, bright, and quiet room with a view of the bay. Great kitchen facilities and basic breakfast included. Welcoming pub immediately next door with wonderful chicken tikki masala and veg-friendly options. Sheets were a bit scratchy, but the comforter was just right and the bed fairly comfortable. Would stay here again.

a bunch of us stayed here for a weekend recently. The hostel was perfect for us; it was clean, secure and the location is exquisite. There are two rooms on the top floor with its own kitchen etc,. and a balcony - overlooking the bay. Bliss. The owner is a gent - nothing was a problem for him. He went out of his way to ensure that we had a great stay. Cloghane is a magical place at the foot of mt brandon. its is the perfect place to get away from it all; I will be back and I would only hope that i would be able to get a room at Micheal's hostel.

Room Tip: the room with the balcony

FROM Debby and John Hanrahan, Washington, D.C., USA
One of the hidden jewels of the awe-inspiring Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry is the spectacular area on the east side of Mount Brandon, Ireland's second tallest peak. And within that area is one of the finest hostels you will encounter anywhere -- the Mount Brandon Hostel in the tiny village of Cloghane. My wife Debby and I stayed at the hostel for 3 nights in late August 2012 and highly recommend it. We have spent much time on the Dingle Peninsula off and on over the past 12 years, but only in the last few years have we begun to explore the Cloghane-Brandon area. Even on the breathtakingly beautiful Dingle Peninsula, that area is something special with its sea views, its abundant mountain hiking opportunities (for serious climbers as well as novice hikers and everyone in between), its many archeological treasures in the nearby Loch a’Duin valley, its friendly and helpful residents.

The Mount Brandon Hostel is the perfect place to experience that northern tip area of the Dingle Peninsula. We had booked a double room for our 3-night stay last August. Shortly before our arrival, though, Micheal De Buitlear, owner of the hostel with his wife Mary, contacted us to say that the hostel's loft apartment was available and that he could offer it to us at the same price -- and we could also have use of all of the facilities at the regular hostel. We accepted his generous offer and spent 3 nights in this spacious, comfortable, light-filled, en suite apartment with its wonderful views of Brandon Bay.

In advance of our arrival, Micheal provided us with much information about hiking in the area. Micheal was away when we arrived, but his top staff person Kalle passed on a hiking guide Micheal had left for us. Kalle also filled us in about the two food-serving, traditional music pubs in the village, as well as the upcoming night of traditional music and story-telling right in the hostel -- a regular feature at the hostel, especially during the summer months. I took in one of the hostel sessions and had a great time hearing local musicians and their jokes and stories. Audience members were encouraged to participate, if they wished, and one local woman with a beautiful voice sang two songs -- one of which, "Home Away from Home," was especially poignant to anyone leaving Ireland to go back to the United States (as we were), but wishing we were back in Ireland. On our last morning there, I had an interesting conversation with Mary about the Irish economy, as well as the insane state of U.S. politics.

Other hostel features: A spacious car park. Well-stocked hostel kitchen for breakfasts of coffee, tea, cereal and toast. WiFi. Laundry facilities.

We also want to put in a plug for the local shop and bakery in the village that sells local produce, basic groceries and freshly baked bread and rolls every morning, and -- of special interest to us aging hikers -- also has a good selection of maps and hiking guides. And on the road to Brandon Point there is a pub where we have eaten several times and recommend for its tasty and fairly priced food.

Although lovely Dingle Town, not many miles from Cloghane through the challenging (many would say scary) Conor Pass, is often choked with day-trip visitors during the summer months, the Cloghane vicinity is more isolated and gets far fewer visitors. There is virtually no public transportation to Cloghane, and a side trip by visitors in Dingle to Cloghane via the narrow, often fogged-in Conor Pass is not for the faint of heart (or even the not-so-faint-of-heart). But make the effort, check with Micheal on the best way to get there and stay at the Mount Brandon Hostel -- and you'll carry images of the Cloghane area around in your head for years to come. And, you'll want to go back there again soon.
