“Great Stay”
Reviewed 3 December 2013

My friend and I arrived at Glencar House in the early evening after walking on the Kerry Way. We were hiking the Kerry Way to celebrate turning 50! We had just walked 15 miles from Black Valley. We were both tired and hungry. We had a great room and dinner. After dinner, my friend and I then moved to the cozy bar area and sat by the fireplace while having a few beers. We had a great conversation with a young lady and older gentleman from Switzerland who were in the area fishing. We both had a great night of sleep. After breakfast, we talked to Liam and Eilish about a short cut back to the Kerry Way. The short cut trail was beautiful and along the nearby stream. They were very knowledgeable about the area. Excellent views, food, service, and rooms. I highly recommend Glencar House.

We visited for two nights in October in order to climb Carrauntoohil. An excellent base for walks in the Reeks. A very warm welcom and excellent evening meals. Cosy bar area.Would revisit when next in the area.

This was my second visit to The Glencar House Hotel. I traveled with 11 others from Northern Ireland for a hiking weekend and as before it did not disappoint.
Just like being at home, with our excellent hosts Liam and Eilish and their attentive staff.
Even my lactose intolerant diet was not ignored. The food was delicious and my companions nicknamed me "the Special One", as a result of the individual attention I received in the dining room.
I cannot speak highly enough of our hosts. Our visit last year around the same time consisted of five of us and our glowing reviews of both the location and the hotel encouraged others to come along this time.
Next time we may need a bigger bus!

Dear Damien aka 'The Special one'!! Thank you for your very kind comments about your visit to Glencar House. We are very conscious of people on special diets and want them not to feel excluded when it comes to dining in our restaurant. We were so delighted that you returned to see us again this year and that the group increased to 11. Hopefully we will get to see you again next year and that the group will increase even further!! Best wishes to you and all the gang. Eilis and Liam

We had a delightful visit to Glencar House with our family this summer. It is about a 45 minute drive down country lanes outside Killarney to the hotel which is in a perfect setting with beautiful views of the hills and countryside. We were made so welcome and offered a choice of rooms: we ended up in a nice basic suite with 4 beds in two clean rooms for the five of us (kids aged 13, 16 and 20). Liam and Eilish made sure we were very comfortable and all our meals were delicious. The dining room for breakfast and dinner looks out alongside the house, and the historic bar had a nice warm fire for a drink (pint of Guinness, of course!) before and/or after dinner, as well as a lovely verandah next to it to relax. When we went out for our day in the mountains, our kind hosts ensured we were thoroughly prepared with food, maps and gear. The prices are reasonable and this stay was a highlight of our trip. Overall we highly recommend Glencar House!

Set in the most perfect setting this hotel is a gem of a find. Liam, Eilish and Joyce were perfect hosts. The bar is cosy and friendly with Liam pulling a splendid pint of guinness. Eilish is 'chef extraordinaire' offering a good choice of local dinner choices (beef, duck or salmon when we were there) with perfectly cooked fresh vegetables - all served piping hot by Joyce. The Toblerone cheesecake was SO good - we are still talking about it. All very reasonably priced. Thank you.

The hotel is ideally located for the mountains, an actual 9 minute drive from the hydro road route up Carrontouhil.
The views from the dining room and our room were gorgeous, of the mountains.
At dinner when the stag wasn't in the garden, the shallows were very entertaining.
The food was great, we loved it.
Liam and Eilis were great hosts, very friendly and helpful.
A great base for the mountains of Kerry.

After a long day of driving it was so nice to finally get to The Glencar House. Liam and his wife are absolutely delightful. The bar area is so comfortable. We enjoyed meeting some locals while trying out different Irish drinks. It's very clean and pleasant. The food is great. They made us a sandwich to take on our hike up Ireland's highest peak. It's off the beaten path in a beautiful wooded area. We even saw a deer one night while eating dinner. I highly recommend this place.
