“Superb”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2014

My wife & I stayed for 5 days at Dollardstown House in May 2014. This is a really lovely 3 storey Georgian house in its own grounds and beautifully furnished throughout in period style. We stayed in the spacious and extremely comfortable en suite Master Bedroom. Antoinette and Andrew are a very charming couple and really wonderful hosts for whom nothing was too much trouble. That began on arrival with excellent home made scones and jams served in the Drawing Room. In the Dining Room a lovely log fire was lit for breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was superb, plenty of choice of cereals together with fruit and yogurt to precede a brilliantly tasty "Full Irish" made up of top quality local ingredients including black pudding and white pudding. The home made breads of different varieties were the best we've tasted. Dinner is cooked by Lydia, a local chef, who e-mailed choices of menus to us at the time we booked the accommodation. We had 3 dinners there, each of 3 courses, and all were excellent. We were informed in advance of the BYO wine for dinner option which is really good and obviously a money saver. Overall staying in such a beautiful house and looked after by such fantastic hosts was a real treat and we were truly sorry when the time came to bid our farewells.

Room Tip: Don't forget the BYO Wine option for dinner and you can ask to see the menus in advance.

We stumbled across Dollardstown House recently while looking for somewhere to stay near Athy. How fortunate we were! As members of the National Trust we often dream of staying in an old mansion or castle and Dollardstown certainly fulfils our dream. It is approached by a driveway through mature trees which brought us to the magnificent deep rose painted three storied house. Here we were welcomed by Antoinette who showed us to the drawing room where freshly made scones and locally made preserves awaited. Then it was up the grand staircase to our large bedroom which had a view to the front of the house. It was furnished tastefully in period style and had an attached bathroom. We slept very well (using the shutters to block out early morning light!) in a comfortable bed with beautiful linen. Next morning we went down to the dining room where a huge log fire blazed in the grate. We enjoyed a splendid “full Irish” breakfast and also freshly baked wheaten bread (two types, one with apricots in and another with seeds, baked each morning by Antoinette). The large dining table held six people and we enjoyed conversation with two other couples to such an extent that our breakfast lasted from 8.30 until 10.45! That’s how relaxed the atmosphere is. Later, Andrew gave us an interesting account of the house and his work to refurbish it. Unfortunately, our stay came to an end all too soon, but we really look forward to a return visit to Dollardstown.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the house have a view over the driveway

My husband stayed here just for a night due to rugby blitz my son attended in Athy Rugby Club. The title of this review says it all!!! Dont even doubt booking your accomodation here, it's probably the best B&B country house my husband has ever stayed. Wish I was there too, will find events around the area/county so the family can stay in Dollardstown House again in the future. Sincerest thank you to Andrew and Antoinette for their great hospitality.

We found a true gem of Irish hospitality in Dollardstown House. We stayed for 3 nights over the weekend to visit family in Athy.

The welcome we received from Andrew and Antoinette was absolutely first class. Nothing was a problem, and my 2 children and I were made to feel right at home.

The room was well appointed, and had loads of period features as does the whole house. Breakfast was a delight, with all of the food sourced locally, and absolutely delicious - my kids polished everything off. The home-made soda bread was simply a delight, as was breakfast and dinner.

We had dinner cooked and served by Lydia on the first night - I was so glad we took the opportunity - The setting in the period dining room with a roaring fire was superb, the roasted red pepper and tomato soup was excellent, and the main course of lamb just melted with flavour, the apple tart for desert was delicious. My children had some pasta and tomato sauce which they said was the best they had had. The BYO option on the wine is great. But the setting and food is set against the most fantastic Irish welcome.

We will definitely be coming again.

Room Tip: All the rooms appeared to have period features and were well appointed. Like a home from home.

We had such a lovely stay at Dollardstown House. It's a really comfortable and relaxing place to be. Antoinette and Andrew were fantastic hosts, always available for anything that was needed but in no way pushy or intrusive.

The scones on arrival were great and breakfast next day was really delicious. Beds were really comfortable - and being 7 months pregnant I was delighted to have had such a good night's sleep.

All in all, great value and a real find. We had the run of the house without any of the hassle of self catering but with the bonus of roaring fires, comfy drawing rooms and super home baking and tasty treats. Perfect spot for a get together.

Thanks again.

Dear SD201,

A massive thank you to you and your friends for choosing Dollardstown for your get together. Andrew and I are delighted you had a good time and enjoyed catching up with home baking around the fire. You and your friends brought a wonderful buzz to the house and reminded us houses like Dollardstown back in the 17hundreds were built with entertaining in mind.
Thanks again,
Andrew & Antoinette
