This centre has an excellent exhibition on the famous Antarctic explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, who was born not far away at Kilkea House. It also has a wide range of books on the Antarctic and Arctic.

Even the children were kept interested in all the artifacts. They have a great exhibition on Ernest Shackleton. There are also four short films on local history which we found very interesting. Great price too at €8 for a family. Make sure to get the audio guide!

We travelled to Athy as its where my family come from.
The heritage centre was brilliant. The staff were welcoming and friendly, and a local man who has an interest in history gave us a potted history of the town.
My two boys loved it, and were even allowed to try on some replica helmets and hold a sword.
The film area showed the contributions from Shackleton, motor racing and the Grand Canal.
It's the best thing to see in Athy.

If you've a spare hour then the museum in the square is an excellent place to visit. There are 4 short films and displays about the history of the town, Earnest Shackleton and the first world war.
