“A hidden gem”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

The rock of dunamase is one of those hidden gems that no one knows about. I often have my lunch here and it often surprises me when I'm the only one here. I think it really illustrates Ireland's long and difficult history when you think that it's been here, in various different hands, since time immemorial. Well worth a visit, very interesting and atmospheric.

“Little Visited Treasure”
Reviewed 14 July 2013

The Rock Of Dunamase is just a short detour off the M7 near Portlaoise. We visited last Saturday on a beautiful day around 4.30pm but even then it was near empty. The ruins themselves are interesting but the charm is the lovely surrounding countryside that provides lovely views.Myself and the kids had a picnic tea up there behind the back wall and with the lovely sunshine and quiet stillness and the views it was just perfect.
There are no guides or visitor centre or anything like that (no fees either) and more the better for it.Its just the way its always been up there, lovely.

“fabulous mediaeval ruin”
Reviewed 13 July 2013

Not for those with mobility difficulty, but is a beautiful site, worth visiting. There is a quaint Church of Ireland at the foot of the hill worth a look also. Kids will love climbing here, so will need supervision. Entry free..

“Glad I finally ticked this site off the list.”
Reviewed 8 July 2013

I'd always wanted to go here and it was worth it when I did. The site is free, easy to get to and easy to climb the trail. I wish there were tour guides available on site. From the top you get wonderful views and a glimpse at just how magnificent the site was when it was in use. I went on a breezy day which I would not recommend as you can be knocked about a bit up there when the wind picks up. The Rock is not suitable for small kids. Great place for photos.
