I might be biased because I was proposed to here, but this is such a magical place in my opinion. With just a short walk up a hill, you are rewarded with amazing views of the landscape from all directions. We visited twice in April 2013, and it was absolutely breathtaking. A great bonus is that this attraction is totally free! This is definitely worth a visit.

Have been bypassing this site for years on my daily travels and finally made the time to go and see it. Was not disappointed, a short steep climb was rewarded with majestic views, even if it was a cold, wet & blustery day. I will make the effort to go back some evening to watch the sun go down and bring a good camera with me, will make for some great shots!

Stayed in Portlaoise for one night and made the trip to the Rock of Dunamase. Teenage kids weren't too happy at the prospect but when we got there they really enjoyed it. The views are spectacular- 360 degree view of lovely Irish landscape. Its free too so thats a bonus. Bring a picnic and runners

We stumbled upon the Rock of Dunamase completely by accident, and we were so glad we did. The site is an old ruined castle, and the remaining structure is fun to explore. The views from the top were absolutely spectacular - thank to both the location and the wonderful weather we happened to have. The surrounding hills and farms of green and gold are exactly what one would come to the Irish countryside to experience. We found nothing about this site in any of our guidebooks which may be why the site was so deserted - it was just us and one other couple with the site all to ourselves. Definitely worth a visit if you're driving by or stopping in Portlaoise for a meal.
