“Well worth a visit.”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

We make a point of climbing this as a family on St Stephen's Day each year. Easy to find, easy to park. Quite a stiff climb. If you take young children be aware that there are a couple of steep unprotected drops. Those with mobility issues - there are steps and steep rough paths: however I am able to climb to the top even with some issues. Views on the way up are lovely, from the top is amazing. Bring a coat - even on a warm day it is windy. Well worth a visit and free!

“Don't let slight mobility issues stop you from visiting”
Reviewed 24 May 2014

The Rock of Dunamase is an amazing ruined castle high on an outcropping of rocks. There is no fee to visit this wonderful place and shouldn’t be missed when visiting Ireland. It should be noted that even those with some mobility issues can still visit this site. The climb from the parking lots looks steep but it is well graded and not difficult to climb. To stand within the walls of this unusual place and realize that each of those thousands of stones had to be hand carried up the hill and put in place by hand is a humbling experience. Even with today’s machinery this would be a difficult building project. The views from the top alone are worth the climb. Do visit.

“Rock of Dunamase - Awesome.”
Reviewed 15 May 2014

The Rock of Dunamase in County Laois is a very prominent outcrop that you can see from a long way off. The outcrop with its castle ruins totally dominates the surrounding countryside. Although the rock is said to be drawn on a map by the greek cartographer Ptolemy under the name "Dunum" in the 2nd century, there is no archaeological evidence to support the theory that Dunum is Dunamase. The earliest historical reference to Dunamase is in the annals of the four masters where it states that Dun Masc was plundered by the vikings in 843AD and the abbot of Terryglass was killed. Awesome....and it's free!

“Great View”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

Free! Super view despite dampish day, atmospheric ruined castle. More info up and around the castle would have been nice. Probably a place for visit under an hour.
