“Could have been better”
Reviewed 22 April 2013

Stayed in this B&B for one night while attending a family get-together in town. The house itself is lovely and well maintained, although not to my personal taste - very old fashioned, lots of fussy carpets and furnishings. The room we were shown to was very large with an enormous comfortable bed.

However, there were some issues - the proprietor told us in no uncertain terms that we were NOT to make any noise coming back in the evening as she had grandchildren staying and would not be impressed if she was awoken during the night. Any normal person with a bit of consideration would know this without having to be told. We were then told that our breakfast was at 9.45 and "9.45 MEANS 9.45". Felt a little like being in school rather than a weekend break.

I personally don't enjoy having to order my breakfast for the following morning in a B&B on arrival, which we were asked to do. I am not good with deciding well in advance what I'm going to feel like eating the next day. I understand for cooking purposes why this might be necessary though.

The tv remote didn't work, which was probably a good thing because we were so scared to make any noise we just kept the tv off in the end.

I can say for definite that I would not return to this B&B for another stay.

The B&B is very well located for staying in Portlaoise town.

We stayed in this guest house for the weekend of the Electric Picnic last year. All aspects of our stay were excellent. The rooms are large and very well maintained, and the house itself is beautiful. There is ample parking and the location could not be mre convenient for getting trains or buses (literally a few metres from the train station) or exploring Portlaoise town.

The highlight of our stay was probably the top quality breakfast received each morning.

I would thoroughly recommend this guest house for anyone planning a stay in Portlaoise.

Charming Georgian House on outskirts of town centre within 5 mins walk of all major pubs restaurants and 2 mins from cinema. Ideal location and safe parking at rear.

The house is wonderful. No lift but huge bed rooms and large bathrooms with good showers. Our room had a massive bed with lovely antique furniture. All furnishings and bed linen are to exceptionally high standard. TV was a bit on the ancient side but good enough. Our host was brilliant with just the right balance between care and intrusion. if you want to relax there is a large lounge downstairs

In the morning the wake up call for breakfast is the smell of freshly baked bread wafting upstairs. There's an excellent buffet of very high quality cereals and things like home made compotes and stewed fruits followed by whatever cooked breakfast you might reasonably wish. Everything uses the freshest best ingredients and is prepared to an extremely high standard.

In short for us this was the perfect B&B to help break a journey and we liked it so uh we booked in again on our return trip.

Portlaoise is a great little town. Perhaps not that much interest in itself but great location just off motorway and train station is 5 mins away if you want to nip into dublin. Huge choice of bars and a little gem of a restaurant called Relish. On the main drag and sandwiched between two pubs, you climb steep stairs to a bright modern room. It's a gastropubby menu with about 7 diffent burgers and then a choice of steak, chicken and vegetarian dishes. The point is that it's all freshly made on site, not bought in frozen, and prepared with care and a wee bit of flair. The prices are excellent - say €7 to €13 for a main course with wine about €3.70 a glass and beers about €3.50 so cheap and very very good. And it has what must be the happiest smiliest waitress in Ireland. Great value. To get there from the B&B just turn left as you come out of the door, go straight down the street for about 150m and you come to a t junction. Relish is directly in front of you just between the two bups on your left

perhaps a relic of the celtic tiger this is definitely a cut above the standard B&B but at the end of the day for the price, its still just a B&B and perhaps should lower their fees. We stayed here for a weekend as a last minute thing and so didnt shop around. The place has a real charm about it and a definite touch of class but at times you do feel as if the place is a museum with a sense of "do not touch" or "silence please" about it. The breakfast is a definite highlight, although it is again just a standard breakfast, it just tasted that bit better than the normal food you get. I suppose to sum it up, the attention to detail in this place seperates it from the standard accomodation on offer!

Just one night at this b and b in central Portlaoise whilst attending a conference nearby. Nice furnishings, bed linen and excellent breakfast room/breakfast and free car parking at rear. If there were any 'could do better' areas I would suggest offering guests cuppa on arrival and maybe even a smile! Otherwise no complaints.

Room Tip: Single room is very small. If you can afford it go for a double!

I had been booked into a local hotel but due to a blunder there was no room when I arrived. My company said they had booked me into Ivyleigh back in town. When I arrived I was very impressed with the house and the warm welcome. The room was excellent as was the breakfast. I was delighted not be staying in the (yet another) hotel and would highly recommend Ivyleigh House to anyone. It deserves its 5 stars. It is run very professionally but retains its charm at all times.

I have stayed here 5 times in the last 7 years while going to Electric Picnic and it's been great every single time. Jerry and Dina are great hosts and their house is beautiful. It's perfectly located beside the train station, the rooms are excellent and the breakfast is superb. On Electric Picnic weekends, breakfast is quite a sociable occasion between the various revellers!!

Overall, highly recommended for anyone staying in Portlaoise, particularly if going to Electric Picnic.

Room Tip: If yo can book early enough, go for the single room.
