Rooms fine. Bar ; no atmosphere. Food; bland cafeteria food and layout of restaurant makes you feel like you're in a canteen.
TRYING TO BE AS FAIR AND TRUTHFUL AS I CAN BE WITHOUT COMPLAINING ABOUT STUPID THINGS.
It's fine if you just want a place to sleep on a budget. Swimming pool fine but small. Beauty rooms way over priced with "not so amazing" staff and v. Poor service in body and soul rooms.
Location crap if you want to have access to the town of portlaoise without taxis. Too far to walk.
More suited to the business traveller.

Pros; cheap clean spacious rooms. Swimming pool. Subway, pizza takeaway, o briens in adjoining building. Free parking. Good location for someone commuting who needs a stop off. Just off motorway. WiFi

Cons: boring. Poor food. Self service breakfast. Canteen style restaurant. Poor location for anyone with plans in town. Basic hotel. Overpriced beauty treatments that are not of high quality given by some inexperienced staff.

Overall this is what bugs me about this country. If you're in the hotel industry how hard can it be to serve good food. Give value for money. Have top quality staff (there are lots of people queing up for these jobs) proper manners. And stop ripping people off for basic massages and other treatments in beauty rooms. It may be cheap for a room but that's all your really getting with this place. So I'm not seeing where the deal is. I'd rather stay at home. Fair play to them on their room price but the services and food aren't worth paying for. good food is easy and simple. Why Do they think people want to be served in a canteen while in a hotel.

And wait for the standard reply from the manager!

It's not good enough. If you want people to come back and tell others u need to offer a quality service not just a basic one. Why would anyone pay for this and not feel you've been robbed.

Dear lhinchrossnow

Thank you for your recent review on your stay in our hotel.

I am a little confused in relation to your comments on our Swimming pool, Most people find our 20 metre swimming pool to be of a good size and over all our leisure facilities to be state of the art.

Body & soul treatment rooms are currently leased out but I have passed your review to our tenant. We find that our Spa packages are excellent value for money starting at low rates per person, including Accommodation, Breakfast, Dinner and a choice from 3 treatments.

I am unsure as to whether our taxi service was communicated to you in the hotel. We are ideally located just off the M7 motorway and are only minutes away from Portlaoise town. Taxis are widely available and bookable at reception. The cost of this taxi is €6.00 which many find to be inexpensive especially when it saves individuals from negotiating through streets and roundabouts to locate parking.

Regarding your comments on our Food and Beverage operation; Our Bar and restaurant which are contemporary in decor, gives a warm and friendly atmosphere. Our Exhibition kitchen allows our guests to watch as their meals are been cooked and allows the aromas from our contemporary dishes to fill the room. We have various menus in place from a 3 course Early Bird option to a Delicious A la Carte Menu suiting all array of tastes.

lhinchrossnow, I thank you again for reviewing our hotel, I would like you to know that all reviews are treated individually and taken very seriously. I am glad that you found our bedrooms to be clean, Spacious & excellent value for Money.
I do hope that you will return to the Maldron Hotel Portlaoise again some time soon.

Stayed into maldron while i was at a computer conference in portlaoise. Have stated in a few maldron hotels in different places in Ireland. They are always pleasant, clean and staff are good too. Pretty good value for b and b. A bit of a walk outside town but it was near the cesi conference in the secondary school, so I didn't mind. Would recommend.

On arrival at almost 9pm we were checked in promptly and were warmly welcomed. We were still in time for dinner. Dinner was very good quality and very reasonable a big meal and beer or wine for 15 euro. The room was modern and comfortable. The leisure centre opened at 8pm and was very good. Breakfast was very good and very cheap. Parking was free.

Myself and my parter were given a two night weekend stay in this hotel with spa treatments and late checkout from my young daughters as a Christmas gift.

The room was spacious and clean. The problem was with the restaurant and bar area. It felt a little like eating in a Cafeteria, no atmosphere bright lights, uncomforable chairs, no tables set, the way the kitchen is designed everyone can clearly see right into the kitchen area displaying the wash up area, kitchen appliances, chef cooking the food etc with all the smells drifting right across the dining area. Loud music playing in the background and large TV screens playing in the same area. The bar area consists of a few very cheap built in seats located in the restaurant area. Unfortunately the weather turned to heavy snow that night and so we spent our night in our room as we just couldn't stay for any length of time in that bar. With heavy ice on the roads the following night was also spent in our room.

The food the first night was good but unfortunately we had a different chef on for breakfast. When we entered the restaurant we were completely ignored by the one member of staff on duty. This was an hour before breakfast finished and there were only a handful of people in the restaurant, so we expected more. No one told us where anything was, the tables were empty no cups, plates etc , the tables were left dirty and when I started to clear a table we were ignored by the girl on duty who came onto the floor and proceded to clear another area. We eventually had to ask for some cups etc. The breakfast was a disaster.. greasy rock hard eggs and bacon dripping in grease. The second breakfast wasn't quite as bad (different chef) but still not up to standard for the price paid.
On the morning of departure we went back to our room to relax when the cleaner knocked on the door to clean the room. Then at 1.30pm we got a call from reception to say checkout was at 12pm. We told them that we had paid for late checkout - the whole point of late checkout is not to be disturbed.. When finally checking out which we did early as we were both so annoyed at the disturbances, we told the girl on reception about the calls and she appologised saying that everyone on reception is normally told about late checkouts. It was on the screen in front of her.

The spa treatments were just ok, we have had better even for the price and my partners treatment should have been for an hour but he was only on the plinth for just over 30 minutes.

This was a Christmas present paid by my minimum paid daughters at €265, we didn't have the heart to tell them of our dissappointment but Wont be back to this hotel again.

8 of us (4 couples) went down for new year. We got a great deal, 200 per couple which gave us 2 b and b and one dinner with champagne.
The food was very good and Amanda and Tom were very helpful.
