“Mum's & Toddlers....”
Reviewed 12 August 2013

We are a group of Mum's & Toddlers from all over Ireland that meet up at least once a year. This year Portlaoise was picked and we set about finding a place that would be able to accommodate us for a few hours so we could chat & to have lunch!
We were delighted with the room that we got in O'Loughlins, The room was at the back of the hotel and was perfect for our needs. We had 11 adults & 14 kids.
We ordered off the Lunch Menu (great choice) and got if served to the room. The fact the we had a room to our selves was great as many people look down their nose at people who are out with their kids!
Thanks to Declan for not charging us a room hire, as we did enquire else where in Portlaoise & we were quoted €100+ room hire just because we were looking for a room on our own!!! Madness!!!!

Overall: Perfect room for our needs, Lovely food, Staff friendly - Sarah dealt with us on the day!

I regularly visit O'Loughlins for food and occasionally a few pints. They provide an excellent service with very friendly staff and a clean well appointed family run hotel. The food is consistently good and their new pizza oven is better than you would get in any pizza chain.

I would have no hesitation in recommending O'Loughlins.

And they serve a cracking pint if Guinness too ;-)

Their food is excellent and the service was second to none. Have called regularly with family and work colleagues and have never had to complain. Its clean friendly and family ran, you can tell the difference by that little bit of extra warmth with the service. Have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to anyone.

After about 30hours without sleep flying from Canada and driving from Dublin through rush hour we pulled into Portlaoise. My now wife and I had made the trip over to get married in Ireland.
I had never driven in Ireland before so I was quite stressed and basically at my wits end we pulled into town and happened into O'Loughlins for the night, and thats where and when my day changed. Immediately we were greeted by the gentleman at the front desk, I believe it was Ivor, he was extremely friendly and made us feel right at home. After getting settled into to our room we received a call from Ivor letting us know that the kitchen was closing soon and that we should come down for some dinner. Extremely thoughtful and kind thing to do, and in my opinion above and beyond. We went down for a excellent dinner followed by a few pints of Guinness. Ivor sat and talked with us as he ran the bar and gave us all sorts of tips of things to see and what to do during our stay as well as some history on the town of Portlaoise. Once again above and beyond service in my opinion. As I had previously stated we hadn't slept in a while and decided to turn in fairly early, before we could leave for our room our new friend Ivor had poured us two pints of Guinness for us to take to our room free of charge. basically with a few kind words and a couple kind gestures I went from having a terrible stressful day to one of the best nights of our trip all due to the excellent staff at this great little hotel/pub.

The pub and restaurant were very well run and served excellent food for us both for dinner and breakfast in the morning.
The rooms were clean and comfortable and met our every need.
The staff, as I mentioned above were amazing.

So if you are planning to stay in Portloise or even driving the M7 in the area pull into town and stop in to O'Loughlins it is worth your time. We traveled all of southern ireland and stayed at many many hotels, I can say this with great confidence.

Room Tip: tell them Lyndon sent ya! :-)

We stayed at O'Loughlin's in August 2011 and found it to be vey comfortable, very friendly and not overpriced at all compared to some other places we stayed at during our time in Ireland. The Manager, Ivor, was extremely hospitable and made time to get to know us. I recommend travellers try out this hotel. The food was excellent, staff friendly, room confortable and what else do you need?

We chose to stay at O’Loughlin’s Hotel specificity due to its proximity to the local Train Station (a 5 minute walk). We wanted to visit Dublin without actually driving there and we also wanted to visit the Wicklow area. O’Loughlin’s made a natural base of operations. There is no lift in the Hotel but the Man at Reception insisted on carrying our bags up for us to our room. The room was spacious on a corner of the building so we had windows facing both directions, we had a wonderful breeze when we opened them. The Bathroom was fully appointed with a large shower; it was a very roomy bathroom. The bed was comfortable, there was a writing desk and 2 upholstered chairs and a small table. We Dined downstairs in the Pub and had a very good meal and some very good Guinness. The following morning we went back down to the Pub for the included Breakfast, on the bar there was cereal, orange juice, cranberry juice and a platter of delicious warm scones. The Breakfast itself was ordered off the Menu and was everything from Full Irish down to Egg Sandwiches. For 2 days we left our car parked in the Hotel Parking lot and took the Train into Dublin. If for some reason you don’t care to dine in O’Loughlin’s there are several Restaurants along Main St. We stayed a total of 4 days at O’Loughlin’s and were very satisfied with just about everything.

Having stayed in this Town centre hotel recently for the Rally , maybe it was not at its best due to the numbers passing through its doors. The bar food menu is tasty and very satisfying and reasonable . The staff while under pressure are welcoming . The rooms , while adequate are somewhat dated , even for a older style establishment. My major dissapointment was the conditions of the toilets . The off bar facilities on Sunday evening was far from healthy and an area being used to serve food , apparantly some sort of a night club was absolutly discusting. The toilets at the rear were , although smelling of disenfectant ,should have been closed , as the only tap , cold water did not work . I would accept that staff shortage could contribute but , I thought we had progressed from this.

Dear PABO,

Firstly I would like to thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. Every review we receive is valuable whether it be good or bad. I am glad you enjoyed the food and the accommodation. With regard to the 'nightclub area', we serve food in the nightclub area on occasions such as the Heartlands Rally weekend due to the large volume of people being served. I can assure you that every effort is made to make the room as comfortable as possible. Over the course of the weekend we actually received compliments on the area and how well it looked for both the meal and the awards presentations. With regard to the toilets, I can understand to a degree your concerns, in that they are the toilets of a nightclub and not a hotel. I can assure you that in the future we will have the toilets closed to prevent any further inconvenience.
I hope you enjoyed the weekend and the glorious weather that came with it and would hope to see you down at the rally next year.

Kind regards,

Ivor O'Loughlin
