We were at Mud's House for one night and it was perfect for us. Although we didn't get to meet Vonnie she was in touch with me quite a bit. Very nice place.
Mud's House in Bansha, was a great place to base ourselves and explore the area. Bansha is a lovely little village and very clean and tidy - obvious to see the locals are very proud of their village. Vonnie is a lovely host and met us on arrival and showed us through the house. It was lovely to have all the space and the place is very well maintained and clean. We had everything we needed for cooking. There is a lovely lounge room and reading room. You really do feel like a local when you stay here. It was a great find and we are so glad we chose Mud's House.
We stayed at Muds house while attending a wedding in kilshane house (only 5 minutes drive away!). House was very comfortable and very clean and had everything we needed - decor is dated but it just added to the experience!
We chose to stay at Mud's House for a couple of nights over a weekend so we'd have a base to visit Cashel, Cahir and Tipperary, as well as a few smaller places linked to family history.
We were delighted as we drove into the main street of Bansha and pulled over to find our accommodation when Vonnie opened the door of the house we had stopped in front of and welcomed us to our weekend abode.
Mud's House is a comfortable, three bedroom, two storey house with all the comforts of home. The plumbing and hot water were good and the upstairs bathroom as a spa to boot.
Vonnie was very helpful settling us in and assuring us that she was not far away at any time if we needed any assistance.
Self-catering was no problem at all as there was a large supermarket a couple of doors away attached to the petrol station. There was a take away pizza and fish and chips next door but the range at the supermarket offered many options to take away.
There's also a pub in town and a Catholic church that is also worth a visit. It's clearly well looked after by the local congregation.
Tipperary is only about 10 km away, so we could do a comfortable drive over to look around. We would have liked to visit the Work House, which is being restored, but we didn't check opening times and found that they are restricted - so if this is on your visiting list, check well ahead. The Visitors Centre was also undergoing refurbishments and wasn't open when we visited on Sunday morning.
Getting to both Cashel (via Tipperary) and Cahir from Bansha was easy as the roads are well sign-posted.
Cashel would have to be one of the must-visit sites of Ireland, and we can thoroughly recommend a half-day visit to the Rock and surrounds - more time if you can fit it in.
Cahir Castle is atmospheric and appears in movies and TV shows, so it too is worth a visit.
The surprise was the Swiss Cottage, which is about a 20 minute walk from Cahir Castle along a pretty leafy avenue. As a folly and retreat for the castle owners it makes a very interesting place to visit and take a guided tour. There were only four of us on the tour, so we got very friendly and personalised service. The architect who designed the house was keen to make every room unique and non-symmetrical, as well as to include key features of whatever was the latest high style when it was being built. It's a fascinating challenge to look at every aspect of the Cottage to pick was is real, what is faux, and where the asymmetries are.
Vonnie mentioned to us that there are great walking tracks nearby and scenic drives. But unfortunately this time we didn't allow enough time to fit them in.
We had a lovely weekend before we continue our journey on to Cork and Killarney.
We'll have to look for a reason to go back to Mud's House on a future trip.
Lovely house in quiet village. House has all the amenities. Very central village in Southern Ireland. The owner of our house was lovely. Couldn't have been more welcoming. Many thanks Vonnie.
Located in the lovely village of Bansha, Mud's house is perfect for a family vacation. It is perfect for a family who just want to enjoy Ireland at their own pace. Excellent living and sleeping areas, with a beautiful bathroom upstairs and a shower/toilet downstairs. Its kitchen is fully equipped for all the home cooking one would want to do.
A great home away from home.
