Based upon Frommer's Ireland 2009 guide recommendation and the website for the Kilmaneen Farmhouse, I booked a double room in the Farmhouse for myself and my husband for two nights before leaving for Ireland. My booking included a request for dinner on the night of our arrival as I knew that we would have travelled some distance that day and would welcome a hot, home cooked meal upon our arrival. To say that we were not disappointed in our choice is an understatement. The Farmhouse and Kevin and Bernadette were everything that Frommer's and the website promised - up to and including the fact that Kilmaneen Farmhouse is a bit out of the way - a plus to my way of thinking. The Farmhouse is situated in the beautiful green mountains of Tipperary not far from the Suir River. Kilmaneen Farmhouse, a beautiful, older building, and the lovely grounds and gardens fronting the Farmhouse are in keeping with their surroundings. The three bedrooms on offer, all three of which I had the opportunity of viewing, are tastefully furnished with lovely old furniture in what I would describe as typical Irish country style - ie a pleasing, eclectic mix of style and pattern. All three rooms are spacious and have lovely views of the gardens and surrounding country side. Although our room was equipped with a small TV, a larger set was available for guests' use and located in a spacious, comfortable sitting room. We ended up not using the sitting room as I was happy to sit and read in one of the two window seats in our room and our small TV suited my husband. The bathroom, although small by North American standards, was entirely functional and included a shower which featured both sufficient hot water and water pressure. Something you can't take for granted in Irish B & B's! Bernadette's breakfasts served by Kevin were hearty and delicious with a choice of items such as pancakes, a fruit smoothie, stewed rhubarb and fresh fruit salads, as well as the "Full Irish", not always found in Irish B & B's. Although a bit out of the way, Kilmaneen Farmhouse is ideally suited for visiting nearby sites such as Swiss Cottage, Cahir Castle and the Rock of Cashel, as well as sites in neighbouring counties Cork and Kilkenny. Kevin gave us excellent suggestions for both site seeing and restaurants. If you go, be sure to ask Kevin for his recommendations for both what to see and where to eat. We were happy we did. All in all, the Kilmaneen Farmhouse was a highlight of our wonderful Irish holiday.
