We booked 3 nights at Somerville Hotel for some "r n r". thats exactly what we got!! Hotel staff were excellent, view was excellent, location was excellent. As you might gather, our stay was excellent. Will certainly be returning.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view.

This could be a really good hotel but unfortunately is run for the convenience of the managment and staff and not for the guests who are clearly a bit of an inconvenience. Nowhere is this more starkly shown than at breakfast - the hotel has a beautiful terrace but guests are forbidden to eat outside because of, wait for it, the danger from.....seagulls.... Whereas most of the continent, other hotels and establishments around the world including the South Coast of England and indeed other restuarants in St Aubins, manage to serve food outside, not so for this management. I assume the real reason is because more work is involved but the beauty of any health and saftey defence is that it is virtually impossible to refute with logic.
Avoid this hotel until the management are thrown out and replaced with customer facing ones.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else!

Thank you for your interesting review, as we say, all comments are welcome. Forgive me if we may have to agree to disagree on this occasion. I’m sorry that you felt it more appropriate to make such a review this way and to not comment “facing” myself as we did upon your checking out of the hotel (at such time I was unaware of your review) when possibly a constructive discussion may have been achieved rather than some hasty comments.
I must point out to readers of Trip Advisor that contrary to the review we do indeed serve a great deal of food outside all listed in our very extensive “Terrace” menu which incudes, sandwiches, light bites, lunches, afternoon tea, teas, coffee and pastries etc. All enjoyed by residents and non residents alike with unfortunately the occasional pest from the seagulls.
You are correct in that we do not serve breakfast outside. We find that a better service can be given and that our guests prefer the comfort of the restaurant, its beautiful views over the bay and the close proximity to the buffet unit to taking breakfast outside. Many guests on sunny mornings once they have eaten their breakfast take the decision to take their teas and coffee outside to continue their relaxing morning with us. I’m sorry that you were so disappointed with this aspect of your time with us.
The decision not to serve breakfast outside is not one born out of laziness or convenience for the staff but one that comes from our professional experience and desire to promote efficient service for our guests in a comfortable environment.
Whilst I note your advice to future travellers to “stay somewhere else” and contrary to your advise, at the present time I know of no plans to “have the management thrown out” and whilst we will never rest on our laurels here at the Somerville, I have every confidence in the readers of Trip Advisor that they will realise that such a statement need not be adhered too. The reasons why the Somerville became the only 4 star hotel on Jersey with a Gold Star Service Award are well embedded in what we aim to achieve at the Somerville throughout the team. This was not achieved by running the hotel for the convenience of the staff and or management alike. We look forward to welcoming all readers of Trip Advisor to the hotel.

I had booked into Hotel Cristina for a mini break in April, unfortunately the hotel was still being refurbished so I was allocated a room at the Somerville.. Extremely nice location, a bit steep on the ground for me!. Gardens are beautiful. Food is excellent but the beer is pricey !!!
Too much going on in the restaurant for me at lunchtimes, but hey ho they have to make money.
Popped into Cristina on the opening day and I was gobsmacked !!! The terrace bar is absolutely magnificent. Cant wait for my next visit in Sept for the airshow.

Room Tip: Do not accept a room next to lifts or door access to levels - too noisy.

Many thanks for your review of 2 of the Dolan Hotels, the Cristina Hotel and the Somerville hotel. These two and indeed the third hotel in the group (Golden Sands Hotel) are all equally blessed with stunning views across 2 of the most beautiful bays in Jersey; St Aubin and St Brelades. The view for the air show in September is magnificent from both the Cristina and Somerville, the Dolan group looks forward to welcoming you back to one of their hotels soon. Many thanks once again for your comments.

Kind regards

We have just returned from an indulgent long weekend break in Jersey. The standard of service at the Somerville is exceptional. The staff take a real pride in serving you but not with servitude. Whoever trains them is doing an excellent job. The whole hotel is immaculate with a comfortable feel. We upgraded to a superior sea view room which we felt was worth every penny.
The hotel is up quite a steep hill and would not be suitable for wheelchair users or those with restricted mobility unless using a car. I would recommend it for the more mature traveller who appreciates comfort and good service.

A friend & I stayed at the Sommerville Hotel in early June. Everything about Jersey is amazing. It's clean & very friendly. The staff at the hotel were very helpful & nothing was too much trouble. We had a sea view bedroom which was very clean & comfortable. Enjoyed a delicious breakfast every morning which set us off early on our trip around Jersey. The bus service was faultless. So glad we hired a car for one day. Driving around Jersey is so easy. Speed limit is 20 or 30mph in most areas, and other drivers are so considerate. It was a very relaxing holiday. Can't wait to go back again.

We have just returned home after a wonderful week in Jersey. We had the best room in Jersey and recommend anyone booking a garden room to ask for room 2. The staff were most attentive especially Joe and to cap it all we had fabulous weather. A really lovely location made for a perfect holiday.

Room Tip: An absolute must is a sea view.

Many thanks for taking the time to review your stay with us. Our Garden rooms do come in for a lot of praise and none higher than yours, many thanks. Garden room 2 like the other 2 Garden rooms are proving extremely popular with their modern fittings, private terrace, garden and lovely views across the bay. We look forward to welcoming you back soon but book early as the Garden Rooms go very quickly.

Kind regards
