“Breath taking Location, with very attentive professional staff!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 March 2013

This was our first visit to Jersey and the lovely St Brelade bay, we are regular patrons of Hand Picked hotels and have stayed at seven different locations over the past decade, returning to a select few more than once. Our two favorites have always been Ettington Park for its grandure and excellent food and Rookery Hall for its fabulous Spa! The L'Horizon hotel combines both of these functions brilliantly and would now be our favorite Hand Picked destination!! From our initial check in with Kelly, who was polite and courteous, to George the porter who showed us up to our lovely room, and both Candice and Sam in the restaurant, the whole team were very efficent, Mr Kelly the hotels GM must be very proud of his people. We will most definately return.

I first stayed at L'Horizon at the end of October 2012, and immediately loved it - the superb location right on St Brelade's Bay, the great offer which meant I had a sea view room, the general ambience and friendliness of the staff. The one thing that let it down was the bar and the service in the bar - there was a general feeling of 'keeping on top of things' - no dedicated bar person (or at least it seemed), long waits for drinks, dirty tables left into the evening with afternoon tea remnants, and a general lack of attention which the rest of the hotel has in abundance. I hoped that my visit last weekend would prove me wrong, but sadly the same problems were still apparent, and other people in the bar were complaining as well.
It's such a shame as L'Horizon could be a fantastic all-round hotel with a little attention on these areas, and perhaps a re-working of the bar location (at the moment it's a bit of a 'walk-through' area with not much atmosphere) - other nearby venues are stealing its thunder (and presumably bar trade) and it has to win back its (I'm sure) loyal customers.

Room Tip: I found the 'inside' view rooms (ie not the sea view) are generally quieter if you want a go...

Hi

Thank you for the review

I am sorry that we have fallen short in the service in the bar, we have discussed this area. As you have said it really falls down where people have not been allocated duties and responsibilities for designated areas. We are working on this and we will fix the problem.

Other than that issue I am pleased that you enjoyed the rest of the hotel and the service. I hope that you are able to revisit the hotel soon and witness the improvements.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Regards

Martin

Everything about this hotel is very good from reception to food. I stayed for two nights on business in Jersey and stayed in a small double room overlooking the carpark. Seaview room was far far more expensive.
The room was small but had a nice confy bed with god pillows. TV was a good size flat screen. Mini fridge in room with bottled water. plenty of tea n coffee. Desk for working at but also it lifted to give extra mirror and hairdrier. DVD plyer also.
Bathroom was compact but modern and clean with usual shampoo, soap etc.
Location of hotel in a lovely area and very peaceful.
Did not use reastaurants as ordered room service for all meals due to being on my own.
All meals were good quality and filling and included on my Half Board rate by just adding a tray charge of £3 each order.
Overall all staff were friendly and helpful and made my stay pleasureable.
I will stay again on my next trip to Jersey but will try and get a sea view as I spent many hours in my room.

My wife and I were fortunate enough to be given a night's stay at the L'Horizon as a gift which included an evening meal and breakfast.

I have visited the hotel many times as a dinner guest for various functions but this was the first time as a hotel guest.

The hotel is, in my opinion, on the border of 4 star status with the interior and exterior looking tired and dated. We had an upgraded sea view room which has an unriveled view and was enjoyable despite the time of the year. I would imagine in the summer it is more enjoyable with the usual hustle and bustle going on. Our room was clean but basic, especially given the fact we were in an upgraded room. The bed was very comfortable and spacious.

The bathroom was again basic and outdated and the shower had the pressure of a dripping tap.

I was looking forward to using the gym and spa facilities but that was scubbered on the Saturday when there appeared to be a family fun day going on with a maximum amount of children "playing" in the pool. The gym was a small room with barely enough equipment to get a work out from so I didn't bother. I did use the pool and steam rrom on the Sunday as soon as it opened (8am). The steam room was effective but the pool is small and very shallow (4ft at the deep end). Usually such hotel facilities are private but the Spa at the L'Horizon Hotel is not. Passers by walking the promenade have a clear view in to the Spa and I think this is worthy of note for the more private of travellers.

The evening meal was pleasant and I have the fillet steak which was perfectly prepared. There was one particular member of staff that stood out and this was a woman called Sam and she was excellent in her customer service even recalling the next day the reason for my wife and I being there and that sort of corporate memory is what makes her stand out. I would say that the hotel for me was average at best and slightly over priced but what made the stay enjoyable was the staff.

Every single member of staff we encountered was professional, polite and well trained. They are actually what makes the hotel.

I hope this review helps.

Hi

Thank you for your review.

We do take on board all customer comments and we do feel very passionate about our hotel and without our customers feedback we are unable to evolve our business to keep as many of our customer happy and returning.

We are a highly rated AA four star hotel which covers the UK and Jersey. The AA have very strident checks and we are pleased to say that we tick those boxes in accordance to their requirements.

Hotels are a little like the Forth Bridge, they can never be finished and there is always something to paint renew or refurbish. There are a number of areas on our list for this year and a substantial amount of money continues to be spent at the hotel. As we are open 365 days of the year we have to do things in stages, however we do have a large maintenance team that are constantly working in the hotel to keep it up to the standard. The painting of the exterior on the south side of the hotel is carried out every year in May. None of those points are an excuse for a dripping tap in the bathroom. Once reported I have full confidence that the team would have fixed this.

The gym is not large, it isn’t really there for the serious fitness fanatic, however does equipped for a full workout. The pool is 15 meters which is sufficient for a hotel of this size and it is large enough for swimming, the pool was actually leveled a few years ago to make it an even 1.5 meters deep which makes it safer. We have one of the largest pools on the island for a hotel of our size. We do have children free times twice a day but we are a family friendly hotel so there are times when people of all generations enjoy the pool. Yes the passers by can see into the pool area but that means that the people in the pool can sea the beach and the sea, which is the view that is mentioned by many on Tripadvisor.

On to the positive points thank you for the comments about the food and of course Sam and the rest of the team. As you have said the team make the hotel the fixtures and fittings can be changed, painted and upgraded but people are what make the difference. I have passed those comments to the Sam and the team.

We are at the hotel 24/7 and if there is anything that you need to discuss with us during your stay then that is the best time to do it and that is a time we can do something about it.

Thank you once again, we hope you come back to the hotel or Jersey for a visit soon.

Regards

Martin

Nice relaxing place, attentive staff!
Just a shame that a 2AA Roesette restaurant serves ready made hollandaise sauce on their Eggs Benedict at breakfast! But that's being very fussy, just not what I would expect.

Room Tip: Haggle for an upgrade!

Hi thank you for the review.

You are quite right and this has been corrected, we were being lazy and that’s unforgiveable. Thank you for pointing this out.

We hope you have the chance to try them again soon.

As with every experience we've had with the Hand Picked Hotels, L'horizon exceeded our expectations. They understand that its the little things that matter. The bottled water in your room, the fruit bowl in reception, the service in the bar, the friendliness of the staff. Everything is done for you to 1 feel relaxed and 2 feel relaxed.

It was very quiet when we stayed in Jan 13, with lots of snow in the UK a lot of the flights to Jersey were cancelled but that didn't mean the hotel gave us any different a service. Everything was open and although you were lucky to see one couple eating in the restaurants in the evenings it was laid out and ready for a full house.

The concierge helped with advice on what to do in the low season on the island and proved invaluable as a lot of things were closed down for the winter.

I would recommend to anyone to stay here.

Room Tip: Beach view with balcony. Only one word to use. Beautiful.

This is our first choice of hotel in Jersey. The rooms and bathrooms are spacious and comfortable. The service from all of the staff from the porters, receptionists, bar and breakfast staff is first rate. The Deputy Manager Peter is very helpful, remembers guest names and gets stuck in to whatever needs doing, he helped us with porterage, wifi, bar and food service plus some local introductions. He really seemed to be around in all of the departments overseeing customer service at all times. A real asset to the hotel. We are booked in again early April for another visit to our favourite island, wonderful for children and couples.
