I travel extensively with work and family and this is the first time I have felt it appropriate to write a review of a hotel. We have just returned from a mid week break and have three children aged 5 downwards. The two older ones cried as they left they had such a wonderful time.
The hotel is situated on a stunning Jersey beach and it looks magnificent within these settings.
It offers for families what I would consider to be a traditional type of seaside holiday that harks back to more innocent times.
The outdoor facilities are better than you would expect, the large gardens are well kept and attractive, the pools warmed and spacious and play equipment is available for children and adults to amuse themselves easily.
The interior of the hotel is traditional and very comfortable, the bar and restaurant facilities are excellent and the restriction on children in the restaurant works well and we did not find this at all inconvenient.
The connecting family rooms we had were large enough for a family of five to be comfortable in and they were spotless. We opted for the tea tray and kettle as opposed to tea or coffee being delivered (free of charge) to the room.
Service was excellent, reception was always manned with staff always immediately available, bar and restaurant service was very good, both in the hotel and outside at the pool bar and grill.
Whilst our kids were young, there were plenty of older children who were clearly having a fantastic time and had the freedom to safely roam between beach and hotel with ease.
This was our second visit and we hope to return annually, the hotel is one of those rare places that will provide children and parents with very fond and special memories as they get older and look back on family holidays. Can you ask for much more than that?

A superb hotel in a stunning location on undoubtedly the best beach in Jersey. This must have been our thirteenth or fourteenth stay at the St Brelade's Bay Hotel and we're certainly going back in the future! It really is a very special place with fantastic food, beautiful newly decorated rooms and a bygone charm unequalled in any other hotel we've stayed in. The standard of service from all staff in the hotel is exceptional (nothing is too much trouble) and the gardens have won numerous awards for their design. I would recommend half board, not B&B, so you can relax and enjoy six course evening dinners in the restaurant overlooking the bay with the subtle sounds of a grand piano serenading you as you eat and drink. The lunches outside are not to be missed either. If you are looking for relaxation and indulgence then this is the place to stay! I can't imagine a better hotel in Jersey which is why so many people go back year after year.

My fiance was dismayed that he had to travel with his suit & tie for a long weekend break, due to the dress code in the restaurant, & thinks smart jeans with tailored shirt, jacket and shoes should suffice, but agrees in retrospect that it is always good to have an occasion to dress for. The service throughout the hotel and restaurant was impeccable, the decor tasteful, if slightly faded in places, with beautiful mirrors, chandeliers and pictures in all the main rooms. We had a lovely seaview room with views over the whole bay and the tranquil sound of the waves lapping onto the shore lulled us to sleep every night! The breakfasts were delicious, dinner - not the best we've ever eaten but still good & well served with a fantastic wine list! We look forward to another visit soon and recommend this hotel to anyone who, like us, is looking for a short or long break, in a quiet setting, and wants to be pampered in a beautiful hotel, but we suggest booking it on a bed & breakfast basis with the option of at least 1 evening meal taken in the restaurant.

This is the prettiest hotel on the best beach on the island. It has absolutely beautiful gardens that include croquet, giant chess, boules, a putting green, children's play area and swimming pools. The rooms are comfortable if a little on the chintzy side. It should be the best hotel ever but somehow it isn't.

The main problem for us was the restaurant. Breakfast is all waiter service which automatically makes it very slow, this isn't improved by the very young, very terrified and almost totally non English-speaking waiters who fuss around and look worried. We never got out in less than an hour.

Dinner time brings various rules about who can and cannot be in the dining room at the same time. Under fives have to have children's tea before 5.45pm, this was too early for us but we tried it once and were given overcooked steak which our older child couldn't even cut up let alone eat. The waiters said it was cooked in advance. She understandably didn't want to do this again so we couldn't feed the two of them at the same time. Then later we went to dinner with the older one (couldn't ask her to babysit as she didn't want the children's tea so we had to leave the little one in the room alone, pay for a babysitter or take turns). This meal that excludes small children turned out to be right next door to the bar which was hosting a kid's disco so we ate our meal to the sound of thumping mini-pops and the DJ shouting "a packet of smarties for the craziest dancer".

Dinner also featured the same terrified non English-speaking waiters and food that was like something out of the 1950s. We were slightly surprised not to see Brown Windsor soup on the menu. We also encountered one of the hotel's many little notices which states in bold letters that guests paying for half board may eat the set meal only and that any deviation from this must be paid for in full with no credit given. The food was not only over-fussy and a restricted menu but also not terribly well cooked so we gave up after that and ate in the local restaurants. I would definitely NOT recommend half board unless you really like being served mediocre food by nervous waiters dressed as sailors. I dared to mention this to one of the many people who come here year after year and she said "Yes, the food is bad but it's all part of the charm." So perhaps many will disagree with me here.

Despite the great children's facilities, the rest of the hotel managed to continue the impression of not quite trusting guests to behave and to get their children to behave. Little notices everywhere included "Please do not steal the towels" in the ladies' room. Is this really necessary? I do like the place, but I think it needs to get over itself and loosen up a little. And really, don't eat in the restaurant.
