The Pontac House Hotel
Ranked #2 of 3 Hotels in St Clement
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 22 July 2010

Pontac House Hotel is located about 15 minutes driving time east of St. Helier in St. Clements Bay on the coast road. There is a bus stop immediately opposite the hotel for those guests without their own transport. There is a road junction next to the hotel, and guests will experience some traffic noise, but the road is rarely busy and we were never bothered by excessive noise even when sitting out on our room balcony.

The hotel overlooks the sea, with lovely views of the bay. The hotel has a car park at the back with reasonable capacity - we always found a space. Also behind the hotel is a well-appointed, tree-screened outdoor swimming pool with a sun-lounger terrace. In the main building, there are some guest rooms, as well as the main public rooms - lounge with wide-screen TV, bar and restaurant. As well as the main original building, there is a newer 3-floor extension providing guest rooms all with sea view terrace or balcony.

We had booked a standard country view room in the main hotel, but on arrival we paid for an upgrade to a superior room with sea view balcony in the hotel extension. Our room was very comfortable, clean and tastefully decorated and furnished. The room was a reasonable size, but contained both a double and a single bed, which limited the amount of free space. However, we had lovely weather and so could use the balcony with its bistro table and chairs as our sitting area. The room had a tiny TV (not flat-screen), and TV reception was a little hazy. The room had tea and coffee-making facilities and hair dryer. The ensuite bathroom had a bath with shower curtain.

The service we enjoyed at the hotel was outstanding from arrival to departure. The hotel is very well run, and everyone we dealt with was courteous, friendly, efficient and extremely helpful. We were offered a choice of room on arrival; front desk staff gave us helpful advice about local sights and amenities; the restaurant service was excellent; and the front desk even printed our return boarding cards for us. Outstanding!

Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay at this hotel, and would certainly recommend it to anyone visiting Jersey.

What makes this place recommendable is the service and welcome. All staff work well as a team, are attentive and very welcoming. We do not normally book half-board, but at the very reasonable price offered, the food is excellent. You can extend choice with a-la-carteextra payments - which I did on one evening for the local sea bass. Breakfasts are good too. With car hire included the half-board option is hard to resist (extras charges on the car for 4 days was £85).
The rooms are very clean. We had two rooms. First, a garden view room in the old building: unexpectedly noisy if you wanted an early night, due to a loud thumpy floor from the room above, (easy to hear all footseps, drawers and doors, tv) and noise from the bar area below - our room was just one flight of stairs from it. The room was furnished with 2 single beds pushed together with comfortable mattresses but only one bedside cabinet (no more room). The 14 inch TV was not working (bad signal) except poorly on BBC1.
Next, we had a seaview room in the extension: again clean, with one small size double bed and a single. The mattress was pretty uncomfortable, you can feel the springs and roll together easily. My back was sore after one night, so I'm glad I wasn't on it for longer. The TV had no channels working when we wanted to watch it late evening - poor signal - no digital is installed.
Decor was clean in both rooms, but better in the 2nd room, though by modern standards it's all a bit dated (circa 80's) with dark brown furniture and mixer taps for a shower in the bath. The seaview balcony is very enjoyable with 2 chairs and a table, but if you are a nervous sleeper (I'm not) a hot night would mean you may want to leave the balcony door open, but neighbouring rooms have only a low wall to step over.
Overall I must say that this is a super little hotel to stay in - it has a LOT of repeat business which says it all. Most of the patrons were mature - over 55 - and there was a friendly buzz about the place. It's convenient for buses (every half hour til late - Gorey - St. Helier) and has a decent sized car park.

We visited the Pontac House Hotel in May 2010, having had to delay our trip by 2 weeks due to the volcanic ash flight problems. There was absolutely no problem in rebooking the hotel - they could not have been more helpful. We had visited this hotel in 2008 and were hoping that the high standards which we found then would still be in place - if anything the standards are even higher! The welcome received by Chris Robin and his staff was exemplary. The rooms had been updated since our earlier visit and were spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The food and service in the restaurant were, as before, excellent. Most of the staff were still there from our 2008 trip. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff at the Pontac House - Chris certainly leads by example and his friendly and personable manner only adds to the enjoyment of your stay. Jersey is a wonderful holiday destination - and the Pontac House Hotel cannot be praised enough. We are anxiously looking forward to our next trip.

We stayed for six nights at the beginning of May. We had an excellent welcome and the staff were all exceptionally helpful throughout our stay. Our room had a balcony and faced onto the beach, which was a lovely view. It was clean and spacious, the only negative comment we could make was that the bathroom was a little tired but perfectly clean and adequate. There was some road noise but this did not keep us awake and was more than compensated for by the view. The hotel is near the main town of St Helier and everything on Jersey is within easy reach. The food was excellent with a good variety and choice at both breakfast and for the evening meal. All the food we ate was well cooked, well presented and the dining room staff were all excellent. Our choice of half board including car hire was great value for money and I would highlyrecommend this hotel.

I and my two friends visit Jersey in September every year. When the hotel where we used to stay closed down, we had to find a new place to stay. Last year we went round the island visiting various different hotels and asking about rooms, rates, etc., and the friendly and helpful response we got from Darren at Pontac House made us decide to stay there this year.

And we were very glad we did. The Pontac House is comfortable, in a great location, with lovely views from the rooms - either to the sea or overlooking the pool with views across countryside to a windmill on a hill. Just aross the road is a slipway down to the beach. As other reviewers have mentioned, the bus from St Helier to Gorey stops right outside the front gate. The breakfasts are very generous and efficiently served. In the cosy bar there are fascinating photographs of the hotel when it was the station master's house on the Jersey Eastern Railway, and there is a separate lounge with comfortable pink chairs.

But what makes the hotel so special are the people who work there. From our initial contact to the day we left, Chris, Darren and all the staff were SO helpful and friendly. We have already made a reservation for next year, and are really looking forward to it.

Having never been to Jersey before we were really pleased that the Pontac House Hotel did not disappoint us. It is situated just outside the main town of St Helier but still in an urban setting. It is right on the coast with only a narrow road between it and the beach. The view from our room was superb and uninterrupted over the scenic bay which has a lovely sandy beach and some rocky pools when the tide is out. The road could be a bit noisy but it's not too bad and is quiet at night. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel which is very handy if you do not hire a car. If you do hire a car don't go for a big one as the roads are quite narrow even some of the main ones.
The hotel itself was VERY clean as was our room which was cleaned every day to a high standard. Our room was in the newer extension and although perfectly acceptable and clean was probably due a bit of an upgrade particularly in the bathroom which again although scrupulously clean, was a bit outdated in decor but that is the only criticism we had with the whole hotel.
The staff and owner were all extremely professional and competent and very friendly especially the owner who made a point of introducing himself to us and was a down to earth kind of guy. I’ve left the best bit of the hotel till last - the restaurant. We were half board and the evening meals were superb. Maybe not in the highest nouvelle cuisine class but just a great quality menu expertly prepared with generous portions and served very politely and professionally by the dining room staff. The hotel boasted a nice outdoor pool but we did not take advantage of this but it certainly looked very nice.
The island of Jersey is small and compact but had many places to explore and enjoy and the entire island was very clean and not as expensive as we were led to believe. There are many charming bays and all of the facilities including public toilets were all very clean. The main town of St Helier is 10 minutes away by car and was very nice and boasted a lot of nice shops and cafes especially those in the bustling pedestrian areas. We used a car park at the leisure centre which was not expensive and was under cover so cool on hot days.
Would we go back? yes indeed, we had a great time from start to finish - Thanks to all who made it so.
